This website is NHK or the national public broadcasting news service for Japan, but its website is in English and much of its programming is as well. They cover world news as well as subjects in regards to Japanese culture, food, travel, cuisine and history. They have articles and clips from their cable tv news service covering daily world news topics focusing on Japan and Asia from that regional point of view.
The format is very easy to use, especially for students to and they can access the news articles, headlines, with video clips or text, as well as the NHK full length programs. The format is similar to the BBC or CNN websites, but because it is public broadcasting the advertisements are at a minimum and the content is student safe.
Students can search content and topics on the site and view older articles and collections of programs that have shown on the television channel. I like it though, because they do offer excellent coverage of Asia and current events. It is a great site to use to have students compare the daily headlines on a site like NHK to sites from CNN or FOX to see what is being discussed or how it is discussed from a Japanese news site versus an American news site on a topic or on general topics covered say in a day or a week.
