PBS Hawaii Presents - Canefield songs: Holehole Bushi. Holehole is a Hawaiian term for dried cane leaves. Bushi is a Japanese term for a melody or tune. Japanese immigrants who worked on the sugar plantations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries used the songs they brought from Japan, and created new lyrics. These lyrics provide a record of their joys and sorrows. "Go on to America? Return to Japan? This is the problem, here in Hawaii." Holehole Bushi are only four lines of verse. Japanese music, but lyrics that reflect their life in Hawaii.
