    Hi Folks,

The internet cafes (wangba -- internet bars) I've been using since leaving Shanghai are impressive. Some are enormous -- 200-400 machines with fast connections. The rooms tend to be smoke-filled and most users are gamers and chatters. Still, it is impressive.

Apparently education authorities in Shaanxi Province feel so as well. The English essay required for this year's college entrance exam was on the impact of the net. Ask around -- see if you can find out if the net has crept into the exam in Shanghai. Has the net affected vocabularies? It certainly seems to be affecting the sleep patterns of teenagers. The places are open 24 hours a day and at 5:30 yesterday morning I found a number of young people staring into screens. Most looked as though they'd been doing so for hours.

Check out AsiaMedia http://www.asiamedia.ucla.edu (via the search function on the page) to locate net-related stories.

    PHOTO CONTEST
Right now it looks as though the first entrant will walk away with the 7/17, 7/31, and 9/1 prizes. Don't let this opportunity pass. Select your photo (800x600 pixels is best, 1024x768 is okay as well), and upload it asap.

    smiling,

You have attempted to upload a restricted file type.

    Am i doing something wrong??

Please extend the deadline until this problem can be solved!!!

Owing to a software snafu, we need to extend the submission deadline for the first round of the photo competition to 7/21. Go for it.

Photos are readily uploaded to the server. Please click the browse button below and then select the file you wish to attach. Put a description of the photo (and a date if possible) into the message area.

The photo below is from our welcome luncheon on Tuesday, June 28.

Well. I realize its late, but I believe it is still the 21st in LA at least...

This pic is from graffiti on a wall not far from Tongji.
The title is "1960's youth movements, hippies meet the Red Guard."

Okay -- quick, identify the three with popsicles and the two without.

What has caught Dean Yu's eye?

    Hi Everyone,

Ryan ran into some trouble uploading his photo and asked for my assistance. His original file name was 1960s_Youth_Movements__Hippies_meet_the_Red_Guard.JPG and, as he notes above, he took the photo nearby.

The file name might have been the source of his uploading trouble. I'd opt for shorter names and leave the description for the message area.

Right now -- Ryan seems to have the competition to himself. Let's see what the rest of you have!

Yummy! Tell us Miranda, how much for a skewer? And, how many skewers did you eat?

Another entry from Ryan, taken on a cool breezy day (not!) in Zhujiajiao.

Ryan took this at the Baoshan (or was it the Baogang?) hospital.

The addition of children definitely ups the competitive ante. [Edit by="Clay Dube on Jul 24, 4:21:15 PM"][/Edit]

Okay -- if Miranda can break out the cow stomach on a stick, then why shouldn't we take a close look at donkey meat prepared Dunhuang-style?

Note the technique used to tenderize the meat as it is being stir-fried.

It was tasty and certainly better than yak meat in Lijiang.

Incidentally, neither Miranda, Yunxiang, nor I are eligible for the prize. Right now it looks like only Ryan is after the Asia goodies the prizes provide.

    Hi everyone,

I'm assuming even with the extension, the first deadline for the contest is over. I just wanted to let you all know I'm going to try to enter the contest, but I don't have a digital camera, so I need to develop the pictures, scan them, and then post them. Hopefully, Ryan won't be the only person to submit next round. ;D

    Kathleen
