This is a great resource for teachers--especially English teachers--who want to use literary texts as a way to engage their students in learning about East Asia. This is a great resource because it includes dozens of different Asian American poets, so the teacher can choose to include poems from a variety of ages, time periods, genders, sexualities, nationalities rather than merely teaching poems from the most well-known authors.
The website explains that the resources shared, "have emerged out of a broad range of Eastern and Western influences. Many [of the poets included] are first- to fourth-generation Asian American poets whose heritages (part or whole) originate from South or East or West Asia. Some were born in the US, and others are expatriates or poets-in-exile. They all help to broaden our understanding of contemporary American poetry."
It would take some digging through the text and authors to see which are specifcally written by people who had lived in East Asia, but I think the breadth of resources availible more than makes up for the fact that the texts included are not solely from Japanese, Korean, or Chinese writers.
The website could be a great way for teachers to select a few different texts to bring into the class, or (with older students), teachers could direct students to the webpage and have them work in groups to pick and analyze then immitate student-selected poems. Asian American Voices in Poetry The website also includes links to Kundiman and the Asian American Writers’ Workshop for educators who want to offer publishing opportuntunites for student poets.
