I truly enjoyed this presentation I believe that students will connect well with a lesson focused on food because it is so universal. I am absolutely going to incorporate a lesson on cuisine in my Anthropology class and I will use the idea of having students wrote an essay about their most memorable meal.
Thank you for all of the great ideas

lramierez, what if your students hosted a food fair?! As a community service project, they could set up booths with samples of food and information about the country including customs, culture, traditions, etc...
    Just a thought. I'm a big thinker. 🙂

This presentation was highly engaging and also made me hungry. I think the topics of food and culture are always ones that interest students.
In reviewing the presentation I am surprised by the westernization of Shanghai. Given its location at the end of the Yangtze and on the Pacific Ocean it has always been a place where ideas were exchanged. As a classroom teacher, I taught that Japan was very quick to westernize while China chose to focus inward. Considering the modernization of Shanghai during the late 19th century and early 20th century, this is something that I will revisit

I noticed a couple people had posted about food fairs and we has food fairs at my high school which is primarily hispanic foods and it's always a great way to learn about the different cultures present at our school. I like the comparison of McDonalds worldwide because we were all able to chime in and get involved with the discussion. I can see doing an East-Asian themed food fair, which would be entirely new to our student population.

It is very difficult to broach the topic of foods in the classroom. The guidelines around offering non-packaged food prevent students from making more meaning from the study.

The diseases of civilization will eventually make it to South Korea and other East Asian countries, as they are currently enjoying the sugary, fatty, and salty foods that corporations and governments peddle to their populations. It will be interesting to see how Eastern Asian countries respond to obesity and diabetes, etc.
