Hi all, I wanted to share with you two clubs that will help you improve your public speaking skills and communication skills (writing, body language, presentation). Being able to speak powerfully is one of your greatest assets no matter where you are and where you want to go. You need it for classes, job interviews, social events, and presentations. It has become increasingly apparent in our seminar, seeing how we are learning to effecitively communicate our opinions and insight on the spot. We all know this has become somewhat of a challenge, and a little intimidating; afterall, how easy it is to share with an 18+ class and a professor about what "You think Philip Huang meant when he said that 'Women where seen as possessed only of subordinate will, while in the other, they were seen as autonomous agents' using SPECIFIC examples from the reading"???? I've had a seminar classmate tell me that her mind just goes blank..... then black...... whenever she is put on the spot.
These clubs will help you practice speaking, and how to communicate effectively. Nobody in this club is "perfect", otherwise we wouldn't have such a club. We are all supportive of each other, and provide materials that will help you. Best of all, you do not have to pay & it takes only an hour a week to meet.
1) Bruin Executive Coaches: meeting every Tuesday in Anderson D403C @ 6-7 PM. This week's meeting will focus on writing concisely, effectively, and in a more active voice. Next week we will focus on body language, tone, and speaking to people in various situations. All workshops are relevant to life on a day-to-day basis.
2) Bruin Toastmasters: meeting first 3 Thursdays in Murphy 2324. We present 3 speeches that will be evaluated by 3 different people. You can learn by giving a speech and receiving an evaluation, OR you can just sit back and learn from observing.
These clubs are about you, and how you will grow into a powerful and effective communicator. Ask me if you'd like to hear about my experiences or just to learn more! Right now is an excellent opportunity to develop these skills, before you actually have to pay thousands of dollars to hire speaking coaches in the future. See you there!
I've heard good things about Toastmasters. My mom is involved in Toastmasters at her work (Sun Microsystems) and she enjoys it a lot. It seems like a pretty widespread organization.
