Hu's presentation got me thinking about film perspective. I began watching Flowers of War, starring Christian Bale, which is about the Second-Sino War in Nanking. It's interesting how a Chinese film does not just portray the Japanese invaders as all evil rapists. Instead, it shows multiple layers of humanity, no matter what the nationality of the character is. It would be interesting to connect this with the literature and history we read in school. Isn't the perspective we learn from the American side? What could be said about the "other"?

The author of "Directory of World Cinema" points out that cinema that began in North America during the late nineteenth century had a similar beginning to that of China in the early 1900s in that they were both forms of popular entertainment in the form of dance and stage routines.

I was so happy to hear there was something local to me that I could take my students! I enjoyed learning about the distinctions within Chinese Cinema. The hardest part for me is how much is not translated. It still feels like I am missing so much and that I need a cultural navigator to help me through the process. Nevertheless, the contemporary films that explore universal themes are there to help me connect while learning my way.
After the AP exams we watch films as springboards for discussions. In the past I have stayed in the safe zone, but really want to research films for this Spring and hopefully bring Chinese Cinema(s) to Eastlake.

I've been trying to find the suitcase film online. Anyone see it?

I think showing a foreign movie in my US History class would be a great idea. It could really relate to the film industry usage for propaganda, like lvallardes said. It would open up the minds of the students and actually be able to experience different films that they are not used to watching.
