WEBSITE REVIEW
http://www.asianetwork.org/resources/resources-for-teaching/
Resources for Teaching about Asia has a tremendous amount of resources for bringing Asia into your classroom. As I browsed through the website, I found several things that caught my eye. I went to the section labeled “China Currents” and found an article about Spina Bifida. This sparked my interest because I have two students with Spina Bifida and I’m aware on a personal level of what limitations this disorder can cause an individual. Another article that I found, “Chinese Courtyard Housing Under Socialist Market Economy”, could be used in an economics class along with many other similar articles.
Others sections that are listed on this website include; Japan Focus- with articles like, “To Hell and Back: Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and American Nuclear Denial” and “Asia’s Troubled Water Denial”. There were sections for Educators, Researchers, Music, Philosophy, and other areas of interest and usefulness for teachers.
Our high school recently purchased sets of Google Chrome Books for each department and we have been able to bring our teaching and students up to date. This website will also be a site that I can have students access and read and learn together as a group. Some of these articles I can use for the students to annotate, highlight the main idea, etc.
Reading everyones curriculum plans and comments from this class has been very eye-opening for me. Although this school year I taught Kindergarten, I have been informed by my principal that he would like me to move up and return to teaching the 4th grade next school year. Although at first I had very mixed feelings about it, after giving it much though I realized the thing I enjoyed most when I taught 4th grade was the history and social studies components. After reading website reviews and curriculum plans from various class members, I realized how much I will truly be able to integrate the materials from this coursework into my planning for next school year. That got me truly excited! I will be able to use many of the lessons, ideas, and concepts about East Asia into my 4th grade curriculum, especially since I work at a global awareness magnet school! Since I am almost finished with my curriculum plan for this course which I had planned for Kinder, I am not going to start over. But I will use a lot of the websites, suggestions, movies, etc. from classmates and professors alike to sit down and plan out an a amazing social studies and history curriculum this summer. I am very grateful for all of the amazing suggestions and am very much looking froward to teaching this aspect of 4th grade!
