I called United today and I wasn't able to get a seat assignment. I was told to call back later. Has anyone been able to get a confirmed seat assignment? I wonder if these flights are over-booked? I sure hope that I don't get stuck in the middle section with a middle seat. That would be bad....

    Hi Folks,
Yes -- I've been told repeated that no seats will be assigned until we show up at the ticket counter. This is lunacy, but I was told that the airlines only assign 40% of the seats prior to the day of the flight. It may be worth trying again on Tuesday, March 28, but my guess is that they'll be seating 19 of us at the gate. Rosemary and Barbara are leaving today.

Just to emphasize that I've gotten the same story everywhere:
    -- our local travel agent
    -- United
    -- United Mileage Plus
    -- LAX United ticket counter
    -- Oakland United ticket counter

Let's all plan to show up at the United counter early. I'll be there at 7:45 with everyone's passports.

I too have been told by the airlines, mileage plus, and others that I have spoken to that seats were not available for booking. I was able to book a seat for the trips from LA to San Fran and back but not the "longer journey". I did have a lovely discussion with a United employee in the mileage plus division who said that the planes appear to be full but they do not book all of the seats for reasons such as: handicap and upgrade availability. At any rate, we have come too far not to go the distance now... Keep the faith! See you all bright and early.

One question Clay. You said the international United counter. Is that in the Bradley terminal? Please let us know.

The United gate at Terminal 6 has both domestic and international ticketing.

I'm sure that we're meeting at United Terminal 6 at 7:45.

As for the seats...I'm worried. I had this same thing happen to me on Air France a few years ago. The flight was over-booked and there were only a few odd middle seats in the middle rows available. Some people didn't get on at all. My wife and I had to sit far apart until someone was nice enough to switch with us about half-way to Paris. The problem this time around is that Alex, Clay and myself don't really fit into a middle seat. 😐 I guess we will have to wait until Wednesday to see!

    See-ya guys on Wednesday!

    Hi Fellow Travelers,

I just called the Airlines and Barb and I have seat reservations for the LA to Beijing part of the trip -( 32 B and C). They couldn't/ or wouldn't do seat assignments for LA to San Fran.-not a problem - it's a short trip. See you soon, Bev

I called United today as well and you two got the last 2 assignable seats! Nothing else can be assigned until Wed. morning. Let's hope that we get bumped to business class. That would be sweet! It looks like the journey from SFO to Beijing is 11 hours and 43 minutes. Not as bad as I had thought, but still pretty long!

As for the flight home, I was able to get a window seat, seat 59K for the trip from Shanghai to San Fran on April 9th. This trip is longer...about 13 and 1/2 hours. I plan to sleep, sleep, sleep!
