Thanks for all the new introductions! Welcome to all. I love that Catherine asked about your favorite teaching moments. Great examples. It's amazing that we have such a range of places, teaching roles, and backgrounds in our seminar. We're so happy that each of you is giving up time to learn more about and to come up with ways to teach about one of the world's most diverse and dynamic regions -- in 1800 and today!
Hello everyone,
My name is Allen Margareh and I work at Los Angeles Unified School District. I began working for the district last year and it is such a joy working wiht kids. I heard about this class through LAUSD and it interested me right away. History is one of my favorite subjects and it is always fun to learn about. The population of South East Asia is fairly large so it is a signifcant contribter to the world's economy and culture therefore making it very important to learn about. I am personally not too knowledgeable about South East Asia specifically, however, I am eager and motivated to learn about it in this class and I really look forward to it.
Hi my name is Anastasia Brown, I teach at Hinkley High School in Aurora, Colorado. I teach U.S. Honors, Geo and World History. I have taken many classes through NCTA, TEA and this USC program. I love learing about Asia and bring in more knowledge and informatino into my classes for my students. This area is often overlooked and I want my students to be aware of how important this regions of the world is. I hope to learn more about Modern East Asia and bring that into my classes as we desiggn new curriculum.
1. My name is John Soto. I'm from Long Beach California and I teach 8th Grade English Language Arts at Gage Middle School in Huntington Park, also known as East Los Angeles. My favorite part about teaching is that there is never a dull day. I enjoy the company of my students and I find myself excited to teach a lesson when I know it will come together well.
2. Though I have never traveled East, there are many things about Asian culture that I love and appreciate. I love that Asian culture has had such a huge impact on pop culture and even in hip-hop. I've never experienced what it is like to be in the region and I can not say how authentic the cuisines I have tried are to the culture. I feel I have only ever seen the East through an Americanized lens. I'm excited to learn about it more authentically.
3. As mentioned before, I would like to have more authentic exposure to East Asian culture. I hope to learn a little more about the language, the culture and values, I'm interested in learning what my culture has in common with East Asian culture. And I'm excited to share these things with my students, who have very little experience with cultures outside their own.
David Walsh here-thanks for including me in the course. I currently Teach the Arab World in Middle School, primarily, so I am busy studying that region, but I also have a longstanding fascination with sinophilia and a curiosity to learn more about East Asia-this is to build my toolbox for hopefully Teaching more in the future, and simply for curiosity. That's me ! I love how taking an area-studies approach to the study of regions integrates History, Geography, Language, and so much more. DW
Hello, my name is Antonette Pelaez. I work as a school nurse in LAUSD. Few years ago, I used to teach Licensed Vocational Nurse here in San Fernando Valley. My favorite part about teaching is that I think teaching and learning is a lifelong experience. We teach others and we learn from them as well. Everyday at school I have students coming to the health office waiting to be pick up by parents. I can take this opportunity to teach them. There are plenty of interesting things to learn from East Asian culture and people. This is one reason I took this course. My favorite food is a filipino dish called sinuglaw. Its a mixture of chopped grilled pork belly and fish ceviche. I hope to learn more about East Asian history and its contribution to the world.
