Hello fellow students!  It is my honor to participate in this Origins to 1800 Online Seminar.  I have been teaching for 27 years, in both the private and public sector of elementary education.  I am a proud graduate of USC, where I received my BS in Education working with Dr. Sandra Kaplan. I currently teach a 4th grade Gifted Class in Sunland, California, at Apperson Street Elementary.  I hope to teach my students that we here in America need to learn about the rest of the world, instead of just focusing on ourselves.  We are a global community, and the internet has helped bring us all together.  We need to find global solutions to the world's problems, and what better way to do that than teach our future citizens to "Think Globally."  I am excited to learn about this part of the world.  Thank you.

Hello. My name is Max Batres. I teach 4th grade for LAUSD. This is my 5th year teaching and all 5 of my years have been in 4th grade. I was in charge of just the math and science portion for my grade level, prepandemic, but now I get to teach a little bit of everything again. I am excited to expand my knowledge and bring back what I learn into the classroom to pass it down to my students.

你好 Nǐ hǎo from Anaheim, CA,

My name is Julie, and I am so excited to be part of this seminar. I have longed to learn about China especially its history, art and economy.  I am an elementary teacher and I have a dynamite fourth grade class in Santa Ana Unified. They are little sponges that have this beautiful yearning to learn all I have. I am ready to help them discover this part of the world as part of their social studies, science, literature, and art curriculum. I also chose this seminar at this time because I plan to travel to China one day and my son who is a freshman in high school is learning Mandarin. A final reason, for me joining you in this seminar is my own desire to learn more about Chinese culture and traditions, which stems from a special experience of many seeing the exhibition of the Terracotta Warriors in the Field Museum in Chicago, 2017.

    Hello everyone!

My name is Richard Cate. This is my second go-round with this course. My advise is don't miss a minute, wonderful stuff.

I am a 7th grade History teacher at Sepulveda Gifted Magnet Middle School. I am finishing my 27th year opening eyes and minds to the world that was and shall be.

I spend a great deal of time teaching bith China and japan as the lessons from their history can be used to explain events in any time period or culture. The advantage of a very long history is that it provides its own repetitive lessons. With the coming of COVID I have spent a great deal of time teaching the samurai practice of Zen, for both the calming effects of Mushin (No Mind), and the extrodinary work ethic. Things like there is no menial task there is only that which needs to done, and in all things one should strive for perfection.

I have been to Japan and love it. My favorite city is Kyoto, the old hidden parts of the city especally. I have not been to China yet. I had 2 trips set-up leading a student tour, but outbreaks of SARS caused each to be canceled. I wold like to do an adventure vacation driving the great wall (along its path not on it) from the coast into central China.

I look forward to working along side of you for the next several months.

So I am a jack of all trades and master of none. I have a huge gap in historical knowledge about East Asia. I am excited to fill that gap with this course.
