Hi,
I'm Crystal the program officer from the US-China Institute. I will be managing the course logitics of the seminar. I'm really looking forward to this seminar with Prof. Jennifer Jung-Kim and all of you! She teaches Korean history at UCLA as well as some related courses on East Asia. She also leads a lot of K-12 eduator workshops.
Before coming to the US-China institute, I teach Mandarin and World History schools at different levels K-12 (mainly high school). I also do some AP/IB curriculum development outside of my work. I'd always want to explore possibilities to develop projects involve with different subjects and the problem-solving skill. To develop meaningful projects of learning the language and culture, I join a wide variety of workshops to brainstorm ideas with the community and share thoughts. So I am really looking forward to joinging the conversation and learn from all of you!
Greetings everyone! I am a librarian and a teacher. I work in an high school, and I co-taught an Asian Studies class last year. I am taking this seminar because I need to learn more about Korea, and I love learning year round. I have been taking classes with the Five Colleges for a few years. I loved the Korean movie Burning, and I could watch it again. I like cooking Asian food. My other interests are reading Young Adult literature with a focus on young adults world wide. I love to swim! And bird watch. Also, I am interested in discusses Korean film and pop culture. I am currently watching The Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix. I just got back from a trip to Boston with the Ties that Bind class at the Five Colleges. We traced connections between American History and Asian History, and I loved it. Stay cool in the heat all! Oh and I live in Maine. I have 3 dogs and a husband
Hi, all!
I teach US History Since 1890 and AP US History at a rural high school in north Arkansas.
I'm delighted for this seminar because (1) I think American interactions with Asian nations are under-taught in US History courses and (2) I love being able to relate to my students through pop culture. Over the last few years, I've had more students interested in Korea (especially after the debut of Squid Game) and I'd love to be able to introduce them to new and interesting materials.
Hi, everyone,
I teach Korean at the College of Southern Nevada. My students find Korean culture captivating and that is onle of the main reasons they take Korean. As for myself, I became more and more proud of Korean language and Korean culture, wanting to know more about Korea in depth. I am excited to have the opportunity to learn more of Korean pop culture in this seminar. Looking forward meeting you all!
Hi all. I teach Mandarin and World history in a private school in CT. I was teaching middle school, but made the transition to the upper school last year. Because I'll be traching International Studies next year as well, I thought this would be a good course to take. I was introduced to this class by Kara. We both took the Ties that Bind couse a couple years ago and greatly enjoyed it! So far my favorate part of Korean culture are the Korean dramas and food, and I hope to add to this after this course!
Hello everyone! My name is Brittany and I am a history teacher as well as a Korean language teacher. I work for a non profit as well and I teach Korean to students. Hi, I am Soseul Park. I have been teaching Korean for 4 years in TN at both university and high school. This year, I will teach five Korean classes and one Spanish class. Due to the visa interview, I had to change my flight and pretty busy with reorganizing my plans these days. I will try my best to attend and learn a lot with you all. Very nice to meet you everyone.
Hello everyone! I am very excited to meet everyone here and thanks so much for Crystal Hisia, Professor Jennifer Jung Kim and US-China Institute to provide this opportunity for us.
Currently , I am a Kindergarten teacher in a private school. For last couple years, I had several korean students in my class. I wish I can learn some knowledge like language, culture, young children' s cartoons/books/song.etc. to help me connect with those korean students quickly.
Hello everyone! My name is Jini Shim and this fall will be my 4th year teaching Korean as a world language at a middle school in Fullerton, California. I learned about this program through International Korean Educators Network and I've met Dr. Jung-Kim through a K-12 teachers summer seminar in LA on Korean history and culture. I was born in Korea and grew up in California. I'm a big fan of Kpop and Korean movies / dramas, and would love to get a more in-depth review of its history and societal connections. Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a staff for various film festivals including the Busan International for one year. I've been a Kpop fan since the late 90s. I wish I could get myself to watch more Korean movies and shows, but my recent favorites have been My Liberation Notes, My Name, and DP-- all still available via Netflix. I look forward to meeting you all through the Zoom discussion sessions!

Hello,
My name is Claudia Lau. I am a professor at Florida International University; I teach courses on Asian Studies, and one of the courses that I teach is "Pop Cultures of East Asia", which covers China, Japan, and Korea. I believe Korea's history, culture, language and especially its people are very interesting and make an important part of East Asia, so I make sure to include Korea in all courses related to East Asia.
I am from Taiwan, and my parents are from China, so China is the subject I am most familiar. I have a Certificate in Japan Studies, and for Korea, I do my best to put more time in reading and attending events and seminars, such as this one or the ones held by the NKS. These seminars are wonderful professional developments that keep me up to date on important notes. I look forward to learning and meeting all of you in our zoom meetings.
Thank you Crystal, for your kind help, and to everyone that makes this professional event available for us!
