    Hello everyone 🙂

My name is Jerrica Keane. I am a teacher at Aragon High School in San Mateo, CA. I teach Government/Economics, Ethnic Studies (with Courtney Caldwell who is also participating in this course) and Agency & Social Justice. I am orginally from Edmonton, Canada. I moved to the Bay Area just over 5 years ago. I feel extremely lucky to teach at my current school as I am able to teach courses that I am most passionate about.

Overall, I'm excited to learn more about Korean pop culture to add depth of personal understanding while also incorporating more diverse topics/text/perspectives into both Ethnic Studies and Agency & Social Justice.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all!  - - Jerrica

    Hi everyone!

My name is Minhye and I am an assistant professor in Teacher Education at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Although I was born and raised in Korea, I have never studied Korean society through pop culture so I am excited to learn more about Korean society and culture. At Dominguez Hills, I teach language and literacy courses for teacher candidates and I hope to share the knowledge and experience I gain from this program in the future. I am also a mother of two young children who are Korean-English bilinguals and big fans of BTS music! Looking forward to our learning journey together!

I am Joanna Bourque and I teach art K-5 in Central Virginia. I have a broad interest in Asian arts and cultures, though my background is in mostly Chinese and Japanese art. I have been taking seminars and courses about East Asia for about a year now, ever since I discovered NCTA. I personally have had an interest in K-culture for a few years now. I love K-dramas, BTS, and Korean food and I am, in fact, writing this at the airport on my way home from seeing JHope in concert.

I have been learning as much as I can about South Korean history and culture to understand its creative arts in context as I hope to soon bring it into my classroom. I am looking forward to our discussions!

    Hello!

My name is Lisa Park and I teach Eng 2 and APLit. in Orange County, CA. So many of my students watch Korean dramas that some of them have learned how to speak Korean through just watching years of K-dramas and listening to K-music. When they find out that I also watch K-dramas, we connect in a new way. Sometimes I use K-drama examples when I teach because it works/fits into the lesson. I am excited to take this class to learn more about K-dramas, movies, and music. Currently, I am also watching Extraordinary Attorney Woo 🙂

My name is Ann Diederich and I teach and lead a global education program at an independent school in Pasadena.  I have a big interest in Asia and recently taught a course on Modern China.  I also co-lead student travel programs to Asia and we made a stop in Korea on our way back from Cambodia, which peaked my interest.  Part of my job is running a global speaker series and I would love to add more events about Korea, particularly about pop culture.

Looking forward to learning in this coming weeks.

Hello! My name is Kathryn Sutherland and I am a kindergarten teacher at an elementary school in Los Angeles. I am excited to take this course with Jennifer Jung-Kim! Back in 2018, I took the USC US-China Institute Seminar "East Asia since 1800" and Jennifer Jung-Kim was a guest lecturer for 2 of the lectures. They were phenomenal! So when I saw that she was teaching a course on Korea, I signed up immediately. I am looking forward to learning more about Korean society through pop culture and seeing how I can integrate what I learn into my classroom through books, songs, dances, and movies.

I'm an English language teacher who draws...

I have been teaching and training teachers for the last 23 years for all educational stages (K-12, university) in life. I enjoy the challenge of designing content delivery solutions for any context. I have created educational solutions for international ministries of education: Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Brazil, France, and others. I've done this with training programs, books, mentorship, workshops over many cups of coffee and savory snacks. Currently, I teach at UC Irvine, and consults for the Dragon Kim Foundation. In my free time, (do I actually have free time?) I enjoy the narrative arts, especially tabletop RPGs, writing music, food, photography and travel.
