My name is Jim Hayden. I am a 7th generation teacher, California born and bred, who has worked for the LAUSD for 31+ years. I teach World History and U.S.History at Chatsworth High School. My great-grandfather on my mother's side, Huberty James, was a missionary teacher in China who, according to family legend, was named an honorary Prince of China by Express Dowager Ci Xi prior to the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. This is one of the reasons I've become interested in history.

This is my third round with the US-China Institute, and I keep coming back because China seems to be a recurrence in my life lately. Hello!

My name is Chris. I have been teaching for the last four years at Westchester Secondary Charter School, most often teaching world history courses. I specialized in Late Antiquity (the Ancient Wold), and learned little about East Asia in during my education. I really hope to learn more about East Asia, pick up some good lesson plans, and make some connections.

    Warmly,

    Christopher Tsichlis

Hello everyone, my name is Tracy VanCuren and I am excited to be here for another semester. I am a high school special education teacher at Liberty High School in Bakersfield,Ca. My initial interest in attending this class stems from by brother's residence in Korea and the beautiful people that I've encountered through him and my visit to the country. My other interest in attending is because of my incredible students. Although my students come from higher socioeconomic families, most of them will never travel or get to experience another culture. My students also miss out on the traditional history classes that other students their age take and miss out on the exposure and information that their peers receive. I look at this class as an opportunity for me and my students.

    Hi, I am Elizabeth Rosales.
I teach third grade in Riverside for the Riverside Unified School District. In elementary school, we teach everything from P.E., to music and art. I am also involved in a three-year science research project with UC Berkeley, because my district won a grant and we are previewing new science materials and pedagogy for the NGSS - Next Generation Science Standards. My students have absolutely loved the science and engineering investigations. We have also enjoyed deepening our understanding of East Asian cultures through this course. Because I teach everything, I can incorporate art, music, and anything else I deem helpful to my student's understanding of cultures and literature.

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Michelle Owens, and I am a teacher with Oceanside Unified. I currently teach 10th and 11th grade English. Although I teach English, I have a B.A. degree in Anthropology and one in Religious Studies. I loved learning about the various religions in Asia while completing my degree. I am hoping to learn more about Asia, so that I may be better educated for my students.
