Hello everyone, my name is Gisela Gaona and I teach social studies and AVID in Bakersfield, CA. I love history and I love traveling. In fact, I use every Christmas Break and Summer Break as opportunities to travel. Most recently, I spent 6 weeks in Southeast Asia where I had the pleasure of living amongst the people of Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and China. It was this summer's trip that piqued my interest in the history and culture of East Asia. I am looking forward to learning more about this region of the world!
Hello! My name is Kathryn Sutherland and I teach Kindergarten in Echo Park.
I enjoyed my time as a history major in college, so I am very excited to learn more about East Asia since 1800!
Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Oo! Great question. I am currently reading Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, Water to the Angels by Les Standiford, and Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties by David A. Kilpatrick. All great reads so far, and all very different from eachother...
Hi Everyone,
I'm Clay Dube and I work with Catherine at the USC U.S.-China Institute. I've been teaching for a long time at a variety of levels, in San Diego, in China, in Los Angeles and in Kentucky. I'm a historian by training and specialize in modern Chinese economic history. Since coming to USC to help set up the US-China Institute in 2006, I've necessarily focused on politics and international relations. In this course, we'll get a chance to look at a couple centuries of intense interaction between Europe, the Americas, and East Asia. All were change and continue to change due to this interplay. I enjoy reading, travel, movies, and photography. I look forward to learning more about you and hearing how you plan to bring more of East Asia to your students.
So, where to begin? Eventhough I have taught Language Arts for 20 + years, history, culture, and Ethnic Studies have always been part of my lessons. I have taken a number of single/two day classes from the US-China Institute over the years. This in-depth course will, I know, continue to whet my curiousity, which always ends-up in my life and school lessons somehow. Looking forward to meeting everyone and having an enlightening experience. Oh, I'm Mario Galindo.
Hello everybody! My name is Miriam Choi and I'm a 2nd grade teacher at a charter school located southeast of LA.
I grew up in Oregon and attended the University of Oregon for both my undergrad and grad in education.
I moved to Korea for a year teaching English, then moved back to the states to start my career! This is only my third year teaching, so I'm still pretty new. I have a lot to learn and I'm really excited to be a part of this seminar.
Hi all!
My name is Sophia and I am an 11th grade (American Literature) English teacher at South East High. I believe literature helps me reflect on my identity and roots, and I hope that as I do so in this seminar, I will also be able to bring that process to my students as we discuss literature. In my free time, I love to travel and explore neighborhoods. I find the effects of history and architectural/cultural spaces on groups of people fascinating. I can't wait to meet you all!

I look forward to learning more in the institue this coming monts. See you all tomorrow.
My name is Christina L. Kuang, currently teaching 10th Grade English at Green Design Steam Academy. I attended East Asia Origins:1800 Spring seminar and learned a great deal to apply to my teaching practice. Actually my students' strong interest in East Asian culture and traditions put me back to the Fall Seminar. We established the East Asia Origins Club at Green Design STEAM Academy for students who want to learn more about Asian cultures. The purpose is to teach other students about the different traditional and pop cultures, foods, folk tales, and languages from different Asian countries. We will focus on China, Japan, and Korea. I really think I will have great opportunity to take the main points I will learn from here back to my school to meet our students' needs. I am in!

Im excited to learn!!
Amazing! I spent years in Italy studying Art history- and being there, only made me even MORE interested in learning about the culture. Travel is essencial to understanding culture!
