    Hi Folks,
Delighted to welcome you to our seminar. I head the US-China Institute and have been teaching about China for thirty years. I first taught in China in 1982-85 and subsequently lived near Beijing in 1989 and in the Shanghai countryside in 1991-92. I'm a historian by training, focusing on economic and social change in small towns over the course of the 20th century, but since coming to USC in 2006, I've focused on contemporary China and U.S.-China relations. I look forward to getting to know you over the course of the seminar. It's a small group, so there should be plenty of opportunities for everyone to participate in this online forum and in our Tuesday discussion sessions.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm a Mandarin teacher at Mendez High School in Los Angeles. This is my 4th year teaching Mandarin at our school site. It has been a great pleasure to teach our children to learn a different language and culture. I'm glad that I have the opportunity to learn so much about China and other East Asian countries from all the seminars I have attended. I was also able to integrate the materials, such as movies, art forms, and musics to my class learning. As usual, I'm looking forward to this seminar.

Hi, my name is Stephen Secules. I teach AP/IB Art History and AP/IB Psychology at Great Oak High School in Temecula, CA where I have been for 13 years now. My Art History curriculum covers a little bit of historical and contemporary Chinese art, especially featuring Ai Weiwei, and my Psychology curriculum places an emphasis on students understanding the differences between individualist cultures, like our own here in the U.S., and collectivist cultures like that of China. I'm looking forward to gaining new knowledge of culture and behavior and hoping to get a more comprehensive picture of what China is as a country and what characterizes Chinese people.

I have the great opportunity to be traveling to China for the first time in early December, actually the weekend when the final assignments are due for this seminar. I'm a consultant for the College Board in AP Art History and will be delivering a workshop in southeastern China to train teachers in the teaching of the AP Art History course and curriculum. I'm very excited for the opportunity and elated that this seminar popped up just in time to give me some context before I head off on this small adventure!

I look forward to working with all of you and speaking with you this evening.

    Hello Everyone,

I have been teaching MYP/IB English for 14 years in San Bernardino, California. I am delighted in the opportunity to learn more about contemporary China. I am eager to replace some of our districts current curriculum with that of different cultures. I hope to gain some new insight/ideas to take to the curriculum development meetings. We have a lack of cultural diversity in the literature that is chosen. Looking forward to learning more about China, the people, the culture, and working with all of you.

    Cheers,

Hi, My name is Lin ZhaoDavison.  I'm a Chinese-American, tutoring Mandarin Chinese.  I found the seminars about China and Asia are very helpful for my teaching practice.  Language and culture go hand in hand.  Learning about Chinese cultures is important for me to teach Chinese language well and answering students' "why" questions.  I can enrich student learning with resources shared from the seminars and knowledge learned from the speakers and lectuerers at USCI.  I look forward to working with you all and gain deeper understanding of Chinese cultures, history, philosophy and other aspects of China.  Thank you.
