For the upcoming school year, I will be teaching 9th grade Geography for the first time and planning to incorporate such issues into the curriculum. However, I am still in the planning process trying to balance many issues and standards. The environment and development will be one such major issue and the articles provides a good background to start.

    Hi Everyone,

We are looking forward to meeting everyone next Monday. We'll be discussing the course requirements, etc., but we'll also be looking at the geography and demography of East Asia. Please download and read the short articles below.

    1-asia-demographic-crisis-20150822-econ.pdf
    2-harlan-2014-vietnamese-bride-school-south-korea.pdf
    3-choe-2015-south-korean-labor-leader-surrenders.pdf
    4-reynolds-2015-abe-demographic-crisis.pdf
    5-nohara-2015-japan-rise-of-machines.pdf
    6-wang-2016-cambodian-taiwan-legislator.pdf
    7-cfr-2016-china-environmental-crisis.pdf

    Questions to consider while reading:
    1. What is the demographic crisis? Too many people?
    2. How are societies dealing with the population shift?
    3. What are the implications for these societies long term? Is it the same for China as it is for the Koreas, Taiwan, and Japan?

While reading the article, several faces of friends and family come to mind. They came back to the mother country to marry a local Vietnamese bride. Ahh the visuals of starting life over: learning to speak, drive a car, cultural norms, go shopping for food.... I always wonder the brides' lives after marriage and moving to a new country. Maybe in the future, time will tell. I often speak to my father about this and he said what do you expect, a small country with little resources and a booming population, they had to find other ways out of the country.
