Session 12 We have had some amazing people come talk and share. I always love when Professor D. also shares. In session 12 I loved the readings. The section I would like to post on is the Proverbs about Heaven. First, I find it interesting that most religions have proverbs. Writings that instruct and guide followers in the way of life. These are very specific to their idea of heaven. There were 5 that I thought were the most interesting. First, “Men’s whispers sound like thunder in Heaven’s ears, their secret thoughts flash like lightning before Heaven’s eyes.” It implies that Heaven is the God, not the dwelling place of God/gods, but the actual god. Westerners think of heaven as a place where gods might live. Also the implication is there that your thoughts and whispers are heard by the god, and there are consequences for those. “To depend upon men is not as good as to depend upon heaven” This second proverb makes sure that Heaven is put in its high place above man. That the only dependence is on god and not man. This is very similar to other religions. That man is not able to find answers in other men. Only god. The third interesting proverb is “Great blessings come from Heaven;small blessings come from man” again this is letting men know that blessings, the good things come from heaven. They can’t create good things and neither can other men. That Heaven is the source for all good. “Death and life are predetermined; riches and honors depend on Heaven” I find the idea of predestination interesting. I don’t see why people continue to try if they believe all the things they do will not change what they are already predestined to live. Does it matter? Lastly, “Heaven never stops man from making a living.” This supports the idea that people need to work. Heaven will not get in the way from you contributing to society, taxes, etc. You need to work. How convenient for the people in charge. If Heaven says work, then you must work. I think religions rely on proverbs to help set rules and guidelines for followers. They exist in almost every culture and religion. Interesting lecture and readings
