South Korea seems to be a very beautiful country. It is amazing to learn a little history about South Korea. I really enjoyed listening to Dr. Jennifer lecture on South Korea. The people of South Korea are hard-working and innovative. Their technological advancements are very competitive in the world. Even though Korea is divided, South Korea has been able to advance in todays world. Imagine how much more powerful Korea would be if it was unified?

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Jennifer Kim's lecture, I wished that she could have had two or three full sessions to speak to us about the two Koreas. Many of the newer history books and textbooks tend to focus on China or Japan and Korea seems to get lost in the mix.

A recent, scandalous report surfaced about a North Korean soldier who defected while on guard at the DMZ. His defection caused quite a stir. Yet it is indicative of the desperation many North Koreans feel. Since he is a North Korean military, his defection was a boon for the South Korean government. Although, I can't help but wonder about the fate of his family members who he left behind.

The session 9 readings regarding Korean literature seem to reflect the same thread of hierarchically socialized behavior. Recent interactions with Korean Christians, regardless of their age, follow this cultural mainstay. Perhaps many Koreans view this hierarchical approach to authority as the source of their strength as a culture and as a nation.
