Website: South China Morning Post (SCMP)
URL: https://www.scmp.com/us
Overview: The South China Morning Post is a daily news website based in Hong Kong that provides news from a relatively pro-government perspective, written by both Western and Eastern journalists. It is an excellent resource for Western audiences examining the Eastern press from mainstream journalists located in East Asia. Its top stories, along with op-ed pieces, are easily accessed on the homepage. The lifestyle tab at the top of the navigation bar showcases a number of cultural elements, like food, film, and fashion. Additionally, there are a number of video stories that provide brief explanations of some of the long-form articles, which can be effective tools for introducing students to the topics covered on SCMP.
Application: SCMP is a good resource to use during a web quest about political, economic, social, and cultural events within East Asia. In particular, SCMP has a number of ongoing stories about various aspects of the OBOR, which is a key area of study among world history students as it relates to the importance of trade routes (the Silk Road, later the Panama and Suez Canals, et cetera). Students can evaluate the contents of the website and compare it to Western news sources on similar topics, analyzing the similarities and differences between what and how topics are discussed.
