Hi Folks,
We'll use this corner of the site to discuss trip-related issues. Please feel free to provide web links to places in the cities we'll visit, to travel tips, and more.
Click on the icon below to see an article from the LA Times (1/22/06) on getting a passport.
The article attached below (click on the icon) has a good list of things to do before travelling, especially travelling overseas. It's from the 1/22/06 issue of the LA Times.
I read this article today and I found it helpful. It did not mention where to get a visa however and if you have to do it in person. I will look into it.
I haven't been able to find the actual location where I can get a visa. Does anyone have the address yet?
Oh, another travel item. I just found out today that I need to renew my passport becasue it expires this July. To enter China, you need a passport that is valid for 6 months after entry. Bummer.
I don't know about you guys....even if it's just me and Clay.....I'm going to China!!!!

Another idea for the trip. I took my kids to the bookstore today and I found an awesome travel book about China. It's an Eyewitness Travel Guide. All of their books are full of incredible pics and short, but useful narrative. It's kind of pricey, $30, but it's also small enough to take along on the trip. I've used Eyewitness books before in Ireland and Japan and they were very useful.

I would like to share some infornation on the visa we will need to go to China.
Here's the web site: http://losangeles.china-consulate.org/eng/visa/chinavisa/t27605.htm
To get a visa, you need a valid passport, a passport-like photo and $50, (No personal checks). You have to apply in person and it normally takes 4 business days to process.
The address is: 3rd Floor, 500 Shatto Place, Los Angeles, CA 90020 Phone: 213-807-8006 The closest big intersection is Wilshire and Vermont and it's just north of Koreatown. The passport office is open 9AM to 3PM only, Monday through Friday. (Hey...the same hours we are teaching!).
The route from PV is horrible....especially after 2 PM. This looks like a 2-day event, so 2 days on our wonderful freeway system will be a blast. The web site states that a friend can drop-off your visa application. Maybe we can get someone to volunteer to be our Visa Buddy!
I also have a problem with my passport as it expires a month after we return from China, which is no good. So, I first have to get a new passport, (6 weeks to process) and then get the visa.
The trip is only 8 1/2 weeks away, so I think we should all plan to get this visa thing out of the way soon.

Clay,
Speaking of travel... I thought it would be a good idea for us to do a little research of the places we might get to see on the trip to China. Any chance you could provide a list for us to begin a search?
Thanks for the informaton. On an added note, I understand that some people have had difficulty with the correct birth certificate. It needs to be the county copy with the purple seal.[Edit by="cashb on Feb 28, 4:04:13 PM"][/Edit]
Louis,
I would like to check out youe Eyewitness book. Can you bring it to the next class?
Becky:
Sure. I'll bring the book to class on Feb. 6th.

Don't know if this is something we might want to do, but some of the parents at our school do a lot of buisness in China and want to know if we were interested in visiting a factory or some other types of buisnesses. If it is something we want or have time to do, I can let the family know so they can arrange / supply ideas for us.
You need a Visa for China, huh? I guess that makes sense. I've only travelled to Japan and Europe - never needed a Visa before. :@
I missed the first few minutes of the last session.
Are the dates for the China trip firm? Is it really going to be Mar 28-Apr 9ish?
The dates that are outside of the Spring Vacation, do we take from our own sick/personal time or will the district consider the travel conference attendance?
Do we know what our cost will be?
It is all so exciting, but I just figured out, sadly that I will not be able to travel to China. BLAST!
