I really liked this workshop. Again, David was very energetic about topic which carried through the workshop. In my classes, I have students use analogies to prove a point and these tales come very close to doing just that. It is a good exercise in critical thinking which could engage students in interesting discussions. I also make it a requirement when writing persuassive essays.

Today's session with David reminded me the importtance of group discussions. I was in a fog with several of the excerpts, but after hearing different viewpoints from David and members of our group, the fog started to dissipate.

Although the reading selection is rather difficult for the elementary level, the topic of remonstration certainly isn't. I plan on having my students create their own tall tales of issues that are important for them to remonstrate. Having lived a total of 10 or 11 years, my students certainly feel they've had a lifetime's experience to remonstrate many issues, such as school uniform, playground equipment, cafeteria lunches, longer recesses, etc...

    Dear Caryn,
As I mentioned in class, I plan to "storytell" a couple of the easier allegories/riddles to our 4th grade storytelling class. I'll try to draw a comparison between the dangers of remonstrance in Ancient China and the dangers faced by 4th graders with a beef against older students, teachers, plant managers etc. They will then be challenged to come up with their own remonstrances.
While one half of the 4th grade take a journalism elective; the other take story-telling. I can't wait to compare their attempts at subtlety with their VERY courageous, crusading journalism against such things as High Schoolers who kiss on campus, use bad language, and make messes in the bathrooms.
Let's post our experiences with 4th grade remonstrance so that we may fine tune based on each others problems and successes with the idea.
    Lou
