    I was really taken aback when I found out that cartoon and comics entailed so much effort and meaning. Ithought that it was just meaningless things put together to entertain or to poke fun at certain individuals.I use to look at Sailormoon and I always thought that it was written by Americans. This character with long blonde hair and big blue eyes could only be a resemblance of a caucasion girl. Today I learned that she was the resemblance of an Asian girland that this cartoon was written by a person from Japan. I also learned about Manga today for the first time. As a kid I use to read comic books such as x-Men, Avengers and such action packed reading. I made a connection right away with Manga and their use of onomatopeia as part of the script.

    I attended Dr. Lynne Miyake's presentation at UTLA
    Regarding Manga;
    I have passed by them at Border’s and also ignored them thinking as well that they were a kids’ trend, I imagined they were books for youngsters only with content similar to the Tales From the CrypT in japanse style. I never took the time to even look beyond the cover, assuming that there was nothing for me there. I thought they were cartoons with empty dialog and had no idea of the art that lies beneath.
    I am glad I learned to pass that barrier. I will be able to see them with more appreciative eyes, also I now that I have to read some of them backwards.
    Some of the pictures could also be framed; they are just so breath taking.
