As a girl born and raised in LA, how could I not look at this article?

I am a fan of Jimmy Choo shoes (Madonna and the likes have often affectionately asked "where their Choo's are" >>> like the word play?). I am beginning to see more and more Asian designers merge as highly respected and influential fashion adventurers for tomorrow.

This article introduces Malaysian-native Yeohlee Teng and her signature "simplistic" style. I believe if Jackie Kennedy would be a fan of Yeohlee for the simple cuts, sturdy fabric, yet feminine flair. What I enjoyed most about Yeohlee was that she did not put waif models on the runway. Rather, she "chose accomplished women rather than typical runway models to showcase her designs". I also enjoyed the type of image her clothes project: "urban nomad". She understands that most modern working women are are on move, constantly busy, and need to look fashionably respectable for all occasions. Her designs suit this lifestyle, without the fringes (i.e. sheer fabrics and low cuts that draw attention to the female sex parts). Rather, she emphasizes femininity and versatility that command respect and attention.

Hopefully in a few years she will have more stores not just in the East Coast, and more so on the West Coast!

I felt this article had many very positive points relating to the role of Asians in fashion, an area where they seem to be underrepresented. I was especially pleased to see that Yeohlee used accomplished women in her shows instead of the widely used paper thin "models" because of the healthy body image that it conveys to women everywhere. It's admirable that she chose to make the change, and I hope it can set an example for other asian as well as non-asian designers.

Another point I found interesting was the washing machine proof white coat fit for the "urban nomad" which indicates Yeohlee's emphasis on function over form (something busy Americans can definitely appreciate). Just the fact that she beat out Marc Jacobs for the design award speaks of her immense talent. Maybe in the future she can create stylish, functional couture for us poor college kids as well.
