I think it would be wonderful if we all post a brief discription of our final projects in this section, along with the subject you teach an the grade, so if anything looks interesting, we can share Asian themed lesson plans. I'd love to see your work, and I bet I'm not alone.

I plan on creating a web page on the different versions of the cinderellla story. During our computer lab session today I found numerous resources on the Cinderella story. I plan on including the Cinderella stories from the following Asian cultures:

Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Persia, Phillipines, China, Cambodia, and Hmong.

Caryn, if you want something good in English for this, have you read Ella Enchanted? I think it's classified YA, but it may be more for 6th grade. Then, of course, on film there's "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore.

    Jason,
Try going tohttp://thegateway.org Search with the phrases, "lesson plans" and japanese screens. Do these two lessons help? lou

Thanks Lou. I'm having some trouble loading their page, though. I'll keep trying.

For my project, I wanted to design an LAUSD viable course in Asian Lit. The page is a work in progress, so please check back every now and then if you think I'll have something up that you may find useful.

    Hi Jason,
Wow! Your project is ambitious. I think you'll find some good stuff on thegateway.com. (cited above)The link is active, by the way. Try it again. It's pretty dependable - supported by DOE and maintained by librarians. It indexes lots of education data bases, including ERIC. However, you won't find sample course outlines, and to find lessons/resources, you must perform separate searches for each country, ie Korea and lesson plans, Korea primary sources etc. Another good source is Blueweb'n (cited on the web review forum) You still should search country by country. At this point I'm not sure I'll ever have a final project! But my plan was /is to have a website listing annotated book recommendations that could be used with Literature Circles. For my lesson plan, I want to implement the Literature Circle process with 5 of these books. I'm wondering how other people are coming along with their final project??? Am I the only one struggling?? It's especially hard when you are back in classes too.Javascript:insertsmilie(' 😐 ')

I like your idea of using lit circles with this. It seems like a format which really lends itself to kids bringing different aspects of the cultural background to the table. They could each research different parts of another culture (philosophy, art, political history, geography...) and share before they start a close reading session, finding quotes which add to their own area of "expertese" for that session. I know it's tough with school, but it's a worthwhile project. Good for you!

    Hi Folks --

The projects are filling my inbox. I'm taking many with me to review on the plane this week (symposium on Asia in the curriculum meeting in KY) and should be able to start providing feedback when I return next week. In the interim, perhaps those of you who feel comfortable doing so could share your handiwork with your colleagues right here?

A couple have posted pages on school websites, on pages hosted by their ISPs, and so on. Others have sent me essays or lesson plans as Word docs. Please post the urls and attach your files here and benefit from the comments of your colleagues.

Jason, I was browsing your Website. It's great to see you were able to use many of the reading selections from our seminar. I like the colors and especially the title. How long has Asian Literature been around at your Camino High?

I'm trying to start the course, actually. I wish it were already established! My dept. chair just approved it. The course is UC/CSU approved. We're just waiting for the Principal to give it the green light. We should have our first class in Spring of 2005.

    Jason --

    It looks fabulous! Congratulations.

Lincoln's class schedules are still not solid, so I built a class site, with prototype lessons. I am beginning the lesson on Perspectives (using In A Grove and Rashamon) with my classes on Friday.

My final project is at http://home.earthlink.net/~b2kennedy/

    Miss you all.
