Another entry from Ryan, taken on a cool breezy day (not!) in Zhujiajiao.
Yummy! Tell us Miranda, how much for a skewer? And, how many skewers did you eat?

Hi Everyone,
Ryan ran into some trouble uploading his photo and asked for my assistance. His original file name was 1960s_Youth_Movements__Hippies_meet_the_Red_Guard.JPG and, as he notes above, he took the photo nearby.
The file name might have been the source of his uploading trouble. I'd opt for shorter names and leave the description for the message area.
Right now -- Ryan seems to have the competition to himself. Let's see what the rest of you have!
At our farewell banquet in Shanghai (who can name the restaurant?), we were served minature versions of zongzi, a popular treat. On a side street, a couple of us found zongzi construction underway. Rice, pork, and -- in this case -- a bit of salty vegetable get wrapped in a banana leaf and are then steamed. Tasty stuff....
Am I the only one taking pictures of the munchies?
What has caught Dean Yu's eye?
Okay -- quick, identify the three with popsicles and the two without.
Here is a link to an LA Times story about the Zhongdian => Xianggelila name change.
Note that it is reprinted on a Tibetan News site published in Canada.
Attached is a photo of a lama making butter tea. I met this fellow at the Sumtsenling Gompa monastery I joined him and a high school friend of his in his small home for conversation and a bit of tea (excellent) and cheese (awful).
He did not have electricity, but his friend had just delivered a second hand cell phone, instructing the monk to charge it at the office.
How is globalization affecting diet? What do people eat in contemporary China? How has this changed over the decades? We can readily learn about caloric intake and changing composition of diets. Have people's attitudes about food changed?
One useful resource is the Eugene Anderson (of UC Riverside), The Food of China.
I've attached a photo from the snack shop located on the grounds of the Qin dynasty terracota warriors. Would the first emperor have been amused?
How is globalization affecting food production and consumption? Check out the attached photo from a snack bar at the site of the Qin dynasty terra-cota warriors near Xi'an.
Attached is a photo from the kitchen of the Lintong county home we visited outside Xi'an.
Attached is a photo of a Shanghai high rise. Note the tlescope on one balcony.
What portion of China's population now resides in such buildings? How is life there different from the 1-2 story homes they replaced? And how does it differ from life in the village?
How can we communicate these differences to our students?
Pirate dvds and cds, foreign shows on television, bowling, and ? How has globalization affected the consumption and production of mass entertainment?
I've attached a poster reflecting a recent example of Western entertainment reaching Shanghai. What did Chinese reviewers say about Ms. Houston's concert?
Photos are readily uploaded to the server. Please click the browse button below and then select the file you wish to attach. Put a description of the photo (and a date if possible) into the message area.
The photo below is from our welcome luncheon on Tuesday, June 28.
Here's a photo of efforts to keep the waterways clean. A garbage boat trolls outside the small canals of the Suzhou's old town. Note that this effort coincided with the major UNESCO conference in Suzhou.
Here's a link to the UNESCO page on the conference:
