    Roundtable

Professor Peck opens-up expressing his first concern about that there are no-winner in this war so why fight this war.  And protectionism in this case might not work.  The president idea is to protect the car industry.  Also Mr. Trump might be crossing the final line of the rules of the trade of other nations.  So the actual administration might be violating some of the laws of trade. His second concern is that there is no end to this game.  On top of that another looser is the rule of law itself. If no one wants to abide by the law then everything goes out of the window.  He worries about that the administration does not have a plan to end this problem and instead is getting longer. His third concern is what was mentioned before.  He would like to see that both nations abide by the rule of law.  Professor Aronson has a different realistic opinion on this issue.  He mentions that jobs change as technology increases.  And that is the way or what the administration should be paying attention. Of course that is his point of view.  After have listening to these brilliant ideas on U.S.-China Trade War.  Let’s hope that there will be an agreement between both nations soon.

    Curriculum Project:   Country China

Usually some of my projects are for a few weeks and I ask them that certain thing must be done by certain date to avoid delays later. For example the first page has to have the map of the country in the center. On the upper corner the name of the student, level and period number. On the second page goes the table of content of the whole project, and that is standard for every student in the class or classes.  Also, it includes how many items must be in every point on the table of content. For example, number one: write the divisions of the provinces of the country and other territories including the names of each. For the second point: write ten typical kinds of food including a picture of each plate and its name.  Third point: write of the national animal that represents the country and write a short story. Fourth: the currency of the country at the present time and put a picture of the value of the currency.  Fifth:  what is its national tree? if it has one write a short story about it. Sixth: what is its famous river and write a short story about it. Seventh: what is the largest and most famous city? Eighth: what is the national flower of the country? if it has one?  Ninths: what is the largest lake in the country? Tenth: what are five most touristic places in the country? And so on. Before I give them the assignment, I let them see the work of other students so they have an idea of what they are going to do.  The students are going to be working on a booklet. It is a large assignment so you do not want to over load them.  In this case the project is about China so there is a lot of material to work with.  My experience is that I have learned from the work of my students. Here comes the rubric on which they are going to be graded. In some schools it is optional, but to avoid any issue it is good to use it. At the end of the assignment comes the satisfaction to see your students learning, first hand, the purpose of the assignment.

    Final Essay

Around year 2000 I taught a history class and there was a segment in the book about one of the dynasties in China.  It was my first time teaching history, and didn’t have that much knowledge about that part of the world, so, I did my homework.  I researched for the topic and that is how I have always tried to learn more about this big nation.  Now that there is access to many aspects of how people live in china I have change many things in my curriculum.  As time has passed, I am more interested in more serious topics.  For example, China political internal and external issues, its economy, its employment, its international goals, its friendship with the U.S., Russia and with the European Union.   Now china is an economical power in the world and it is playing with the other big nations economically.   And its people know that in other countries salaries are better and life style is different and those who are marginalized might want to live better too.  In the seminars we were exposed to how china is dealing with its citizens and we learned about its plan to end poverty in the near future.  Are we going to see another Tiananmen Square?   Our democracy has had some real problems and in Europe too.  But looking at china with its huge population it is also a huge demand. I have enjoyed the class and learned a lot from Dr. Dube and the guest speakers who have enlighten us so much in this area.  At this point I am very happy that I have been exposed to a vast ocean of knowledge about china.  And I feel responsible to share with my students what I have learned about china, its history, political and economical issues past and present.

Round Table about US=China Trade War.

The analysis of Professor Chen on the speech gave by Mr. Trump to put high tariff on China.   He mentioned that maybe Mr. Trump is aiming to get rid-off one third of the deficit.  Even thou,  at this moment,  Mr. Trump administration is not doing bad economically.  He still sees no change, if there is an increase in the investments, the deficit still will remain.  He continues discussing about how china might see these acts from Mr. Trump.  China might see it as U.S. trying to stop its influence around the world.  Therefore, trade-war will not work and there is no sign of a change soon.  Hopefully, both countries will agree to work together to provide jobs for its citizens.

Bona film Group Infinitus production Present:

Andy Lau, Jiang Wu, Philip Keung

This Anti-Bomb Squad Chinese films is about two friends who were experts in bombs making.  This film shows the new trend from the film industry in china. They have moved from making movies in villages or remote places to a more contemporary places and ideas.  As Hollywood moved from western films to a city films.  Anti-Bomb Squad was filmed in Hong Kong, a beautiful, and modern city. The main plot was the unsuccessful bank robbery due the infiltration of an undercover official to stop the bombing and robbery of a terrorist group. After having defused a few bombs came the unexpected tragedy.  In addition, the film shows romance and light intimacy that adds zest to the film. Another important fact in the film is that the main actor died and the villain lived.  Over all, you will see good acting, well management of hundreds of people, good special effects, excellent contemporary dialogue that grabs the attention of the viewer from the beginning to the end.

How important is the relationship between China and United States?

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but according to the discussion, the relations between the two countries are paramount to both.  China has the manpower, the consumers and wages are still lower than in the US.  The other important topic in the discussion was the public opinion about the two countries.  And some people in audience had the opportunity to convey their experiences for both countries.  In order to minimize the negativism in both countries is to talk positive and with respect at each other.  The opinion of most is that the relation between China and US should be better and it will be good for everyone.

With respect to family, the love-park in china is a good idea.  People go there to find a spouse, not just to meet just a friend.  And parents also get involve in that process, articulating their opinions about how they would like their son or daughter in-law should be.  That reminded me about a friend from India.  He told me that he was going to India to get married because his mother found him a wife. It is very important to see that still there are families keeping an old cultural tradition of finding a spouse for their sons and daughters.

    The Wolf Brigade

    The Wolf Brigade

This is a futuristic film about the unification of North and South Korea.  Time setting for this film is between 2020 and 2025. The Korean nations agreed to unify their country, but the interest of Japan, China and Russia see that as a threat, and to make thing worse, they imposed sanctions to Korea.  The plot starts when those who opposed the union, The Sect, showed their power demonstrating on the street their disagreement. Supposedly, the sect was a terrorist group, so an special group run by the government tried to extinguish the sect.  The government showed its power by killing a group of innocent students by mistake. And the struggle for power among the government, gave place to eliminate one another. Also it showed how one group spy the other group and trying to protect themselves from the public scrutiny.  Overall, it is a good movie, good stunts, good dialogue, good acting and projects possible imaginary problems for the unification of the two nations.  I couldn’t see where the movie was film and the name of the actors. It is an action and realistic movie.

The presence of china in Guatemala is huge in many ways. Let’s start with a router for the internet.  These routers are sold by thousands. At the bottom of the picture you can see, Made in China. Also the channels decoders are made in China.  And the tiny black object is a portable router.  One can connect online everywhere if there is coverage and it is easy to carry everywhere and very powerful.  It is made in China too.  The other picture is about assortments for telephones.  I asked them if these were from China.  They did not want to tell me where the items come from because there is not a real treaty with China.  Guatemala and Taiwan are friends.  And the US does not want China to step in Central America, but it is there already in big-time.  The quality of the technology is very good. It works.  I am using them and they are not expensive, and these are sold all over the nation.  So, all kind of Chinese products are in Latin America.

The communist party realized that their system was not working. It was keeping them poor they had to reform its policies to succeed.  It wasn’t that easy and quick. One the most successful policy was to empower the people. That was a good incentive to produce more and help them to live better. Also, what boost china’s economy was chip labor. Today china’s economy is very strong in electronic supplies from televisions, radios, clothes, telephones, watches, and accessories of any kind.  Also, most Chinese people are consuming items that are not built in china and that helps countries to sell them their products too, due to its large population.  As the same time, they have become a target for marketing from other countries’ products.   On the other hand, China will continue representing a huge challenge for US and other industrial countries if they manage to put in place the program “made in china.”

One of the questions that I have is about what professor Hongbin said that one generation Is rich and the next is poor. Is it because the sons and daughter of those who have money do not worry about working anymore and trust that the system will have a job waiting for them when they are ready and the inverse of the rich will happen to the poor generation.  Also, he talks about one way of moving up in society is thru education and of course those who have the means of paying have the advantage.  So those who have, they will continue having and those who do not have, they will stay the same. It is more likely. That is the part that I didn’t catch because here, if I am not mistaken, USC have rich, rich students as well as poor, poor students and in the middle, which is a door for the poor to get into a prestigious university and live better or claim the social ladder.  In addition, he also talked about education which is like US system and his findings are almost the same among males and females in language (Chinese and English) and art.  females score higher than males.  But in math and science males scored higher in that sense it is almost as ours. It might change.

According to professor Park, he said that labor regulations were developed to protect employees from employers. Employees would not be fired after ten consecutive years of working in one place. With respect to education, he adds that the government has spent a lot of money educating migrants to capacitate them for the industrial jobs. That brought some implications from the locals because the migrants are taking their jobs. Above all, it seams that the system is working, and they are living better and expending money and getting into debt and trusting more at the system.

Finally, the one child policy ended in china.  That policy caused some hardship on man directly because there were not many. or still are not enough women available for man to marry. The documentary shows what one family did to help one of their members to get a woman in another country and how happy they were when they saw their relative being realized. On the other hand, that policy helped to control the population growths in china which had worried the government to provide all the needs for its people, like food, education, work, and keeping them healthy.

As Dr. Dube presented about how much land and the man power (population) china has available and how they have been using them to be where they are now.  It is something to admire. It is not easy to control such number of people.  Maybe the means used were not the best, But giving the scenario that wasn’t that helpful due to dry land, shortage of water, many dialects to communicate, defeated by small nation, internal division, invaded by other countries, in spite of all that they have manage to become a very strong economical nation in the world.

Going a little bit back in our previous class, we talk about the chinise goverment were planning to ger rid off poverty by 2020.  How can they achieve that when thet have the Hukou's System which defferentiate one social class from anothe one. As we know now, almost all over the world not too many wants to work in farms or do agricultural work. And by holding a child from studying or obtaining higher education it means to keep people in doing the job they do not want to do, or it is like to take their freedom of choosing what they want to do. It is like imposing the will of the party eventhough it might be good for the people.

With respect to the goals of China's presidente of rejuvenating China by taking away the universal values of people that seems like going back instead of going forward in the system.  Chinese piople will object to these?
