Brigid, these are awesome ideas that can be incorporated into the classroom. One possibility you can have is a comapraison between the types of plays such as one from the Kabuki theatre to that of Skaespeare. Students can learn what each play was meant for and how the culture and evnivorment surrodning the country affects the meaning and purpose of those plays. I think it would be intresting if students attempted to create their own play from the Genroku period or Shakespeae period while incoporating thier own modern/cultural langugae. I believe this would help them more, unserstand the meaning and affect these plays had on those cultures. As for the Edo art, super cool! I suggest also giving the option of perhaps creating the artwork over writing, givin students multiples ways to be assesed on the knowledge leanred.

This is a great idea for a lesson with the secondary and possibly even 5th grade students. It allows them to view how visual imagery actually has an impact on their lives, thoughts, behavior, and culture. I belive the students would benefit even more if they are asked to research both an artist from East Asia and from thier own Cultural background (possibly even an American). The students would truly be able to compare how the impact of visual imagery has within the social, cultural, and political expereinces in that specific society. The lesson can then broaden to a unit and connect to other subject matter such as history or science. For example, it can be connected to political issues within history that used both art and at times science to validate their ideals. One example from East Asia would be the Chinese Civil War. During this time many posters where ampilfies with slogans and images to solidfy thier believes onto the people. Further, an example in America can be based on the illustrations used by scientist expalinaing why those of color where less superior to Whites or in Germany when exaggerated images of jews were used to dehumanize them. Although if this direction is too deep for certain students, depedning on the class, the lesson can then focus on students determining the commonalities within the group of artist or visual images attriibuted to a particular type of art, timeframe, or culture.

    Comfort Women

The suffering of the Korean sex slaves is quite a topic to focus on because it is a situation that occurs during many wars but never spoken about. This can be a great topic to speak on in an English, History and even Art. The theme can focus on the effect words can have on the impact and reaction of the audiance, for example, changing the title of the woman into "comfort women" over sex slaves, it changes the severity of the situation and almost insunuates as though it was by choice. There are seminars that focus on this section of Korean Histroy to give light to the suffering "comfort women" went through during these dark times. Additionally, there is a book titled "Daugthers of the Dragon", that is based on a multitude of survivor stories. This book focus on all many different aspects of the time such as how certain women were detained with false pretense, the variety of "comfort women" within the Japanes camps, treamtemnt of the women in the campus and as survivors, the seperation of the Koreas, till present day Korea. I myself, am an art teacher but the historical context of the time can be taken into account along with excerpts of the book to create background knowledge that can be emulated into the art-making process and artwork.

India and China were some of the biggest manufactures at the time due to the Silk Road. Focusing on the transportaion and how the industrial revolution came to be I can show the difference between the amount of art that travled the world prior and post the Industrial revolution. We can see how the change of production during the industrial revolution caused for changes in production of art and the affect that the diverse cultures had on the artwork produced.

The benefit in reducing contact with other countries such as Europe and the United States is the limitation of change in the culture but most importantly the amount of control thouse outside countries have. China and Japan, knew that allowing more influx of outsiders could cause them to lose control of their empires. Till this day many countries do not like the "Western Influence" upon their cultures, so stay reluctant has allowed them to maintain who they are as a people. This can tie into the classroom showing how the culture can be contained within the artwork. The students can compared the difference of a closed of China/Japan to those of contemporary art. Further it can tie into politics and what is ocurring in China at the moment.

    Demography & Geography

I was very suprised to hear about the lack of water in some the areas mention due to the climate they recieve but also because a few of them are considered very advance such as Japan. It would cause one to believe that water shortages are not of conrcen when in fact it is a huge issue. Water Shortages have become a global concern which lead me to the idea of creating posters. As an art teacher students can learn the basics of creating posters such as typography, measuremenst, the composition and so on. Giving the theme of global water shortage and bringing attention to the audience students researh, comprehnd, and relate to what is occuring. This assignment would bring attention to th water shortage in specific areas of the world while leanring content related technicues.

    Aging Population

I have always know of China's one child rule but it never occured to me how late into my life (2015) it was finally let go. It is such a shocker to realize that this occurnace was still in motion for a majority of my life. This can be a great topic to learn about. within a class because it is an issue that will be affecting a lot of my students. The conversation of being an aging population can be intriguing to students and to really show the density of it, the students can create and art piece using data. The students would create a data drawing focusing on a few countries such as the US, Japan, China and Korea. Using the individual data the students would color code the information and create a drawing in the style of pointalism. This would cause the viewer to realy focus on the intensity of the color thus the aging population.

    Hello Everyone!

I am Gudalupe Moreno but prefer to be referred to as Lupe. My pronouns are Her and She.

At the moment I am moving into my second year of teaching Visual arts at Van Nuys High School. During remote teaching I have been holding sessions within my houshold. I am lucky enough to have the space to set up my desk and work materials. Using my laptop and a document camera I have managed to hold demonstrations for the students to view. My tip to all us educators is to hold on to our sanity. We are all riing this new wave together and we can lean on each other for support. We are all brand new teachers once again because even if we incorporated technology in our classrooms before it was never at this level. Don't be afraid to replenish yourself!

Prior to Covid I enjoyed being a social butterfly. I would play Rugby for the SFV Women's Rugby team and we would travel all around the state and to a few others to play. Apart from Rugby I loved spending time with my friends and significant other. I really miss some of those fun times. I have not discovered new talents except the fact that I have to finish projects I leave mid-way. Aside from that, I would really like to put more effort in starting new projects as well as learning how to play three different insturments: the guitar, the ukulele, and the piano.
