I wonder if there's a Bibigo in Staples Center.
Here is the article I mentioned.
I am drawing a blank on the reading about The Philippines, so here's one on Okinawa to get you started.
Jennifer, yum! Did you follow a recipe or improvise? And what kind of noodles did you use?
Amy, that looks like a great website. I am not familir with all the books, but the ones I do know are well written. And your project sounds great -- maybe allowing for individual chapters would make the assignemnt more doable for some students.
This year, I decided that I will require a set number of minimun citations in each video -- maybe 3? -- to make the videos a bit more academic. They can be from academic readings, or cite some fact/statistic, or reference a recipe. If you have any specific ideas to incorporate this, please post a reply here.

Right after posting this video, news came out that Hawker Chan lost his Michelin star. 🙁

Thank you, Catherine!
For those of you who want to read Michelle Zauner's piece in The New Yorker, here is a paywall-free version:

It's a great piece, and became the first chapter of her book. She also sold the film rights, so I hope we'll see it become a film as well.

Hi, Everyone,
I'm Jennifer Jung-Kim, and I will be your workshop facilitator through this 5-week course. I teach a course on East Asian foodways at UCLA (as well as other courses on Korea and East Asia). I love eating food (especially seafood and vegetables) and talking about food. I look forward to meeting all of you on September 1.
Hi, Everyone,
Please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have questions.
And I misspelled Makku -- the drink I was telling you about that is available by the can at Total Wines and More.
Also, Sonja, I will definitely be visiting you and your students when your student-run restaurant reopens!
Best,
Jennifer
Please read the Hurst plus either of the Yi or KIm. There is also a resource sheet FYI.
Hi,
It was a pleasure to "meet" you today. Here are some links you may want to check out:

The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles has a ton of videos:

I hosted the Virtual Korean Language and Culture Series with my colleague, but there are a ton of topics there. Within the next 2 weeks, my next video on K-pop, K-drama, and fandom will be uploaded as well.

Cynthia, these are some really interesting ideas! I think the lack of support from the army was a major signal that Rhee did not have the military strength to carry out his authoritarian rule.
Your second point raises some very interesting possibilities for class discussion!
I love the idea of looking at radio broadcasts, but it may be dificult to get audio files from back then, and if you did, there would be a language barrier. There are a couple of good English-language readings on the topic that you could use as a secondary source.
