I also recommend watching Crash Landing On You on Netflix for a very current depiction of North Korea. Althoguh the 16 episodes take about 24 hours, I do recommend watching it. The film does a very good job of depicting North Korea today.
And here's a good analysis of the drama:
Wow, I had never really thought about how it is in NK. I know NK expects all women to work as well, but the "second shift" really affects them. I don't know if NK women have the same degree of financial control, but I have heard that NK women even before 1945 were often the household managers, so perhaps that carries to today. I will see if I can get more info on this.
Hi, Everyone!
I'm Jennifer Jung-Kim, your facilitator for this 3-week course. I teach Korean history at UCLA as well as some related courses on East Asia. I love doing K-12 eduator workshops because teachers are enthusiastic learners.
Thank you for signing up for The Two Koreas. Please look at the syllabus and readings carefully. There are some optional readings and pages, so don't worry about the total number of readings avaiable for download.
In your self-introduction, please tell us your name, where you are located, which grades/subjects you teach, which school you teach at, and your reasons for taking this course.
"See" you in July!
Best,
Jennifer
Just for clarification, Confucianism was introduced centuries earlier, but became more prominent during Koryo. For example, Koryo instituted the civil service examinations in 968, using the same format as the Chinese did. Neo-Confucianism was introduced to Korea during Koryo (mainly becasue Zhu Xi lived 1130-1200 so it couldn't be itnroduced earlier).
Side note: Paekche and Japan had close relations, especially in terms of shared arts and architecture.
As in the US, the lower the denomination, more prestigious the person pictured on it.
Here's a short article about Korean currency:

And please do check out their sijo and essay contests!
That's a great idea! You can see her paintings in the National Musum of Korea collection.

Much of what's online about her is made by fans (Pinterest, etx), especially after they saw the entirely fictionalized Korean drama about her. You may need to make your own introduction to her and her art. If you find a good website, please share with us.
Hi, Billie, I can't rememebr the context -- there isn't a particular book I had in mind (other than the one I'm trying to write). But I do assign a couple of books to my class --
I'm attaching the resource list in case you haven't gotten it yet.
Hi, Everyone,
It was great to see you this morning.
Something went wrong with my Sin Saimdang video file and the subtitles have been lost, so I'm afraid it won't be of much help to you.
But please do let me know if you have any follow-up questions.
Look for the video series link on KCCLA.org next month. It will be on their YouTube channel. And both KCCLA (Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles) and KECLA (Korean Education Center of LA) have small exhibits are worth visiting in person. KCCLA also sponsors school field trips (they pay for the school bus rental) and you can see both their exhibit hall as well as the experiential K-pop exhibit nextdoor.
Stay well!
Best,
Jennifer
Thanks, Billie. The Korea Society is a great resource. I am also attaching a file I made for K-12 educators.
Although there are many, many more SK films than the ones I discuss, the ones I mentioned are:
Shiri (1999)
JSA (20)0)
Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War (2004)
Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)
Heaven's Soldiers (2005)
These filsm came out during the period of Sunshine Policy (1998-2008).
I think a comparison of Bong's films with Jordan Peele's films would be very interesitng for their metaphors, but as you said, that would never be approved for a high school classroom.
Thank you for your review! I was at a Q&A with the director, and he posed an interesting way of looking at this film -- that all the events had happened in Jong-su's imagination/novel. That made me completely rethink the plot.
