1. My name is John Soto. I'm from Long Beach California and I teach 8th Grade English Language Arts at Gage Middle School in Huntington Park, also known as East Los Angeles. My favorite part about teaching is that there is never a dull day. I enjoy the company of my students and I find myself excited to teach a lesson when I know it will come together well.
2. Though I have never traveled East, there are many things about Asian culture that I love and appreciate. I love that Asian culture has had such a huge impact on pop culture and even in hip-hop. I've never experienced what it is like to be in the region and I can not say how authentic the cuisines I have tried are to the culture. I feel I have only ever seen the East through an Americanized lens. I'm excited to learn about it more authentically.
3. As mentioned before, I would like to have more authentic exposure to East Asian culture. I hope to learn a little more about the language, the culture and values, I'm interested in learning what my culture has in common with East Asian culture. And I'm excited to share these things with my students, who have very little experience with cultures outside their own.
