Hi Christine,
Your GO- GREEN concept acually feeds our idealology. "Green is a way of life, not just a color" from which our school name came from Green Design with its envrionmental goals amd mission. My best friend, Dr. Pride actually was the first one to raise up the issues in 2014. He always reminded us "GO GREEN" without papers. His office was super GREEN and shinny without any papers, and all his intructional ideals and concepts resched to his faculty completely online. Interestingly to mention he always sent us all greens and healthy stuff through online forum, which helped us stay physically and mentally GREEN.
Lucy H.'s presentation acutally reminds me of the previous PBLs we have done in our school related to enviornmental conserns and issues, Bottled Water and Fracking with thei severe consequences to the global warming. Our students voiced out to stop the pollutions and save our earth, and we sent very storng messages to the public. Students actually researched and found out the effects of global warming, scuh as sea level rising, climate changes, and severe diseases. When I watched the presention from Lucy H. reflecting on the results of Chinese fast growing economy and industry which reminded me of the severe issues we dealth with in Los Angeles in early 20 century. It' s horrible to see they built schools and THeme parks above the polluted lands without letting the people know the truth of the hidden danger. I really hope Lucy H's great reserach would cathch Chinese government and the environmentalists to take immediate actions to stop the pollutions. Even though they have done some, with more people inviled in the process actually will help prevent futher polluting the air, water, and soil.
Hi Juan, you are absolutely right. Simba's dedicaions and sacrifice to save our wifdlife wildely spreaded out to all over the world. Now, he is here calling us to support his heric actions to save more lions and animals according to his research and his experiences living in the wildland with the animals and the tribes. He figured it out the conflicts between the villagers and the wild animals/lions, and the effectiv way to solve the problem is to build solid fence to keep the lions away from their livestocks. Who is going to build the fences there? He desparartely needs more support from us, and this is quite a health topic for our students to save our animals and save our earth, keep the natural balance, this is global issue.

I actually got my principal's permission to attend China: Finding Solutions Conference on 04/06/2018. It war amazing to meet many experts and scholars from China and USA discussing issues, such as Chinese Elderly Care, Cnndensed/crowded housing in Beijing and Shanghai, envrionmental issues with the quick industrial developments, education in rural areas, China-US Trade war, and the Chinese WIldlife conservationist. Among them all, I really enjoyed the way Xiao QIang detailed his report and analysis on Chinese Food Security and China-US Trade War. As a Chinese American aricultural expert, I believe Mr. Xiao enjoys his land in Utah with crops and plants just like a Utopian World, peaceful and natural. The powerpoints he presented about the China-US Trade War is pretty much very helpful to have a claer picture of the tading conflicts between these two leading countires in the world. 03/01/18, US palnned tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum. 03/22/18, US planned tariffs on $50bn worth of CHinese imports. Chinese Government started to foght back on 04/0218 with sanctions on 128 US products worth $3bn. ( 15% on 120 fruits, nuts & steel pipes; 25% on pork products and recycled aluminum). On 04/03/18, US came up with list of 1300 Chinese products it plans to slap with a 25% tariffs, worth $50bn including industrial robots & telecommunications equipment. The next day, 04/04/18, China announced boosed tariffs on U.S. goods including soybeans, aircraft and vehicles, worth estimated $50bn. WHat is going to happen next? Is the war continuing a or the two world leaders just come to the table seeking peance? No matter how, as Chinese says the Gods /Godnesses' fights leaving the victims of the innouncent people.
Being a Chonqingness, I am very proud of Simba who followed his heart to Masai, Kanya and save lions and other wildlife from extinction. As he indicated that animals are glonal animals without nationalities. He has the passion and compassion about saving wildlife, and he took actions to have his dreams come true even though he encountered various difficulties, but he never quitted. He departed from his iron-bowl position, his family in Chongqing, he went all the way to Masai Kenya living with the wild animal in the wild lands in order to study lions and animals solving problems between the local tribes and lions that constantly attack the cattles. Their comminutiy-based conservation came into being. They worked closely with the villagers and built solid fences to protec their livestoks from being attacked by the hnugery lions, which is a great way to save villagers' livestocks and lions to keep the natural balance. He is the hero of our ecosystem, amd his actions and contribution to the wildlife will be benefitial for our generations. I am planning to sprend his herioc actions of saving wildlife to our students, and we will design our projects with our passion and compassion via seedplay, see if we can raise some fund to send necessary quipments to build srtonger fences for the local villagers so that they lions will not be able to attack the villagers' livestocks. Then, we can prevent lions from extinctions.
Professor Yamashita actually guided me our of my darkness to the bright light, and I have to say " Here Comes the Sun' with a complete shocking discovery aboout the intercoures among ancient China, Korea, and Japan.. The Ancient Japanese acknowleged the advancement of Chinese calendar, governing system, and Confucian religons, and they bottowed the concepts and used them accordingly in Japanese ways, as well as Buddhism adoption in Japan. The ancient Japanese' modesty, honesty, and elegant characters really gained my higly respect. It's amazing to find out the Emporor QIn's decedants still exist in Japan. I wonder what they have done to contribute to the friendship between China and Japan for resent hundreds years, which reminded me of the very popular Chinese American author Geling Yan and her great interest to seek the truth of what exactly happend to Chinese victims in Nanjing Massacre. I am still haunted by the cruety of the Japanese murderers. I am shocked by the facts that the Japanese royal tombs occupied huge lands in this tiny country. I wonered if that was the purpose for those Japanese worriors to expand their territory fo rmore spaces to bury themselves. The crimes they commited to Chinese by invading China with the " Kill all, seize all, and burn all" policy will never be understood, but it made the darkest history.
From here, I will design a lesson to tell my 10th graders to respect the historical truth and undertand the causes and effects of the events.
Exploring the Chinese and Japanese Gardens with the detailed instructions of our professor Dube was such a wonderful and educational trip. I was intentionally to take pictures of the water, the rocks, pavilions, and various plants, amazing to notice that all plants are lables with details information, which ia valuable resources for our students to do their reaesch on our enviormental Project-Based Learning projects. We ar eplanning to study all plants, the cultur and traditions, the art gallery, and the gardening skills. THe lessons related to the gardens our professor provided here the the links relate dare great resources for us to accomplish our projects.
Acturally, we are very lucky to have a Chinese American Professor lecturing on Chinese history and literature comparing to discover the myth and greatness of Chinese tradition and culture with thousands of years long and great impact on modern civilization and economy. The info. about the Chinese territory, the climate, popullation, ethic division, economy GDP just demonstrated his thorough research on variety of existing issues. He distingushed the Pinyin and Wade-Gile Romanization System to give us clear pictures of the differencecs between Chinese characters and alphabets system. He also indicated the Digression, the three -stage developments of Chinese civilizations with the major contributions, silk road. printing, and achievements in governing the society, and their attitude towards outsiders. Then, he compared China's "Middle Agse" with the European " Middle Ages" clarifying the religious belief, Budhism and other religions. I really enjoyed the way his chanting W. B.Yeats' poema and Du Pu's poems.I am planning to integrate all concepts about the Chinese philosophers into my lessons and let my studnets really walk into my world. Of course, I have already introduced Chinese Calligraphy into my classroom, and my students understood the difference of the writing in Chinese and English. They felt that the writing is so difficult, but I still have a couple of students are relly very talented.
If anyone has interest in open this link, you will listen to the songs of this recent Chinese TV series based on the Novel Bu BU Jing Xin by Tong Hua, whihc is a romance historical fiction Time travel back to Qing Danysty ( Kang Xi and Yinzhen) . Exploring the dresses for Qing princes and princeses, the emperors and empresses. Hopefully, you can find some eisodes with Englsih captions.
Interestingly to study the four major Chinese philosophers and their theories. As a Chinese growing with the huge impact of the Confucian concepts, I undertaood much better now the ways I was raised up in a very traditional family with all four philosophical concepts mixture intertwined in our minds and guiding our behafiors in our family and society. As conficious indicated that family is always the fisrt priority for each individual chinese no matter how. WE should be united together as a family under any circumstance and support and respect each other, especially the elders and taking care of the younger ones, which maintain the family integrity. Then, we see our parents sacifice themselve to create opportunities for their children to live better and educated, when they get older their children will take care of them till the end of the lives., which maintained the social order for a safe and harmonic aommunity to live in. "Relationship between people are made correct through education and attention to following rules of decorous behavior" simple told us that we should maintain balanced relation with each other so that we can easily communicate with people as we expected. Relationship is made so big in CHinese daily life and buisiness that we have to maintain through our educationa dn rituals from generationa to generations. Inorder to keep good or close relationship with others, we have to visit each other. There're rules for us to show our kindness and hospitality to always to exchanges gifts with each other when ever we make visits. " The price of the gifts does not matter, but the thoughts and hospitality matter the most", so when you invite Chinese to your party, they will never show up with their empty hands. THey will always presnet with approriate gifts accordingly to show their kindness and caring to the people they visit. Relationship is such a big deal that we cosider it " Relationship " and " Intelligence" are the most important factors for a successful man or woman. Estalishing relations is the foundermental way to do bisuness successful.
" The ideal rulers governs by providing a shinning example of refined benevolence" indicated that the rulers have to lover and take theor people into considerations. We undertood that the water can carry the boat, and it can turn it over it. It metophorically illustrated our learders of our states have to be kind and supportive to their people, lisitening to the voices of the people, or they will eventually rebel and turn the states over.
From Ma Jun to every single Chinese, they should be aware of the severe conceduences of pollution, climate changes, sea level rising, and our envrioment. As Mr.Ma indicated in his article ' One-fifth of farmland is too polluted to grow crops, nearly 60% of groundwater is unfit for human use and air pollution is 20 times the recommended safe levels." It warnsed us all Chinese to act immediately to stop pollution for our young generations.
The current smogs in Chinese major city causes inconvenience for local residence heavy pain for their daily routine. As Ma Jun indicated that the pollution created 450 cancer villages, which is fatal. The fast development of Chinese econoly, the maufacqurers ignored the envrionmental issues or they just release wastes to rivers and oceans to destroy living things. If everyone is waiting for everyone else to protect and balance the nature, whio is going to lead the role to stop polluting the air, water, and our places we live? It's everyone's responsibility.
I really enjoyed Dr. Dube's profound lecture about late imperial China with dynasties and its rulers with their policies and prosperity. From our higg school history teacher, I learned that every dynasty has its ups and downs. Usually the emperor swore to the position and ruled the states and people with their best political practice at the very beginning of each Dynasty, Then, they started to tax and opress their people in various ways till they were forced to reble and turn the government over for a new Daynastym which is the general concept of the imperial rules. TOday, Dr,Dobe clarified the concept why the Sone Dynatry would last a couple of centuries and why the Mangols would conquered China as foreigners, The arguments about Marco Polo are extremely interesting to learn becasue I never doubted that Marco Lopo didn't come to China. My best friend, Dr. Pappas, his study on Italian literature demonstrated that many factors that linked Chinese and Itlatian cuture and traditions,
Our trip to Huntington Library is extremely impressive even I have visited there for a couple of times. I never compare and contrast the CHinese and Japanese Gardens, and I didn't relaize the difference till today. The Authenticity and permenance of Chinese Gardens reflect Chinese styles of building gardens, and the meditation and closure to the nature are the features of the Japanese Gardens with their Zen belief of eveything would change. The flowing water fall and creeks, the rocks, the plants just create very peacful and soothing envrionment.
Christine, you are absolutely right on Chinese filial piety and obligations which was inheriated from our ancestors for generations, but the way the fathers rule the family and have absolute power created tragedies historically, from the Love of the Butter Flies, The Red Chamber of Dreams, and so on. Many of them suffered the supreme power of the rules and rituals and became victims of it. The restricted rules left us Chinese no freedom of speech, pursuing hapiness and love, even humanity. It might be they ways we maintain the social orders of the community, not the way we enjoy the freedom as individuals. That's why when we implemented " Open-Door Policy in early 1980s, Chinese were stunned about the amzing world outside and greedly absorbed all what could no matter how in every fields. The brave Chinese settled down all over the world to explore the differences they have never experienced before forgetting their traditions and culture. Majority of the Chinese visited the DremaLand of America, they chose to stay here in various ways to continue bathing in this freeland with their culture leaving our parents and siblings behind...
