Here is the Asian project that I will be using in my class at Pali High.
This should be the last requirement that I need to fulfill.
Please let me know that you have received all that is required of me.
Thanks and I enjoyed the seminar.
Rise of East Asia Seminar.
When I received the email about this seminar I was skeptical about what information I would acquire and how would I be able to use this information in my classroom. I found this seminar eye opening because I learned that I did not know very much about the history and lifestyle of these Asian countries. I also was naïve on what impact that these nations have on our daily lives and how much they will be in the future.
I am a High School Photography teacher and I plan on using this information to make my students aware of the impact that these countries have on us in America. I think this is important for the students to become aware of but for my photography classes I hope to make my students aware of the style and techniques that Asian photographs use to create their images. The website that I wrote about showcases 30 Photographers from Asia and I will have my students use this and other sources to research a particular artist and compare their work to that of a western photographer during the same time period. I believe this will help my students to look closer to the artist elements that are used by Asians and understand the reasons behind their images. This will also help my students see what it was like in Asia when compared to the same time period in the Western world. After doing the research on an Asian photographer I will assign a project that will have the students use the images created by their Asian photographer and attempt to create images that use some of the same techniques. These students should be influenced by their Asian photographer’s work and I believe this will make them more aware of the culture and creativity that exists in Asia.
I watched the movie Flowers of War and was suprised how it stayed true to all of the Hollywood stereo types. It had the American hero, his love interest, good, evil and all of the special effects we have come to expect out of a mainstream movie. I believe I have a great lesson plan for my photography class using my website I wrote about. Students will research an Asian photographer, compare him to a western photographer from the same time period and then attempt to create images using their photographic techniques. this is my last post and good luck everyone with your school year.
I looked at your clues and I found that there was a push to make medical services available to the rural citizens of china through a program created by Mao. Was this an attempt to bring in the rural people to buy into the movement created by Mao. Did it have any real effect or was it just a propaganda ploy to make it seem like there was access to medical help or like we see in America now with the falsehood of affordable healthcare for all.
The Korean Freedom Bell sits atop a beautiful knoll surrounded by green grass lawns that lead to an infinity like view over the Pacific Ocean with its views of Catalina and the ships coming into the San Pedro port. This bell was donated to the people of Los Angeles in 1976 to commemorate the United States bicentennial of its independence. It also was to honor veterans of the Korean War and to consolidate the friendship between the 2 countries. The pavilion surrounding the bell is supported by 12 columns and represents the 12 designs of the oriental zodiac. This
Korean monument was constructed by 30 craftsmen from Korea and took 10 months to complete. The bell is rung only 3 times a year; 4th of July, August 15 (Korean Independence Day) and New Year’s Eve. The Bell and Pavillion is a great reminder the partnership that South Korea and America have and is a sign that these 2 very different cultures and co-exist as partners in the 21st century. I really enjoyed seeing this structure with its Korean design and colors sitting prominently atop this open expanse with its cultural symbol of an inclusive society.
Deng Xiaoping on Suppression of Tiananmen Square Protest
This excerpt of a speech by Deng highlights the view of America when it comes to the protesters in Tiananmen Square. Deng uses America and its prejudice’s towards China as a distraction from the real problems that exist. The relationship between these countries shows how they use each other as reason to push forward their agendas. It is very similar to how Trump uses these tactics today when he skirts the questions and issues by avoiding the subject and instead recites his fake media rants and places blame wherever he wants. These readings and lectures have opened my eyes on how connected China and America have been for a long time and how they will continue to be connected in the future.
I could not find anything from Google on the card that I chose. What came up was a New Years card built that was just another type of card that was made in the wood block process. When I look at this card and interpret it I see a young couple that is riding their bikes through the countryside of China spreading the word and power of the written word. They are taking the words being created in the large cities and making these words available to the rural farmers. They are on a mission to educate and to bring the rural peasants along with the movement to create China as a global power. These young people are like missionaries that have given their life to the greater cause. They look to be happy, healthy and they represent the new Chinese national that will lead China into its next phase on the global stage.
As a photographer I really enjoyed the discussion about Kodak film as the patron that started the newspaper Shen Bao. We see how these brothers that started Kodak film using their power and money to attempt to create a market for American products in China. We see personal moments being glorified in the image of a middle class woman taking a photograph of her adorable child creating a Kodak moment. This was very applicable to my field of study and was interesting to see a film company using its strength to gain financial success. I loved the detail of the color of the box being yellow and Fuji film being the color green. Through my career I have seen the film companies go from dominating an industry to becoming almost obsolete. This could be used to teach how technology has changed the photography business and to talk about what the next photography revolution may look like.
Amazing article on Amnesia by China over embarrassing moments in their history over the cultural-revolution that occurred in China under Mao Zedong. This is not the only event that China uses the Amnesia policy to forget. The massacre at Tiananmen Square is another event that you will not see China acknowledging as they continue on their march to promote their power in the World. President Xi Jinping enjoys unlimited support from the Chinese people not seen sine Mao and XI has used this to pursue a program that places China at the top of the World power and order. It was interesting to learn that Xi’s family suffered under the cultural- revolution but Xi does not acknowledge this as well as not acknowledging the embarrassment that was the cultural revelation. This would be great to show students how selecting what facts people use can change the view of the world and lead to what we see today as Fake News.
Professor Dube brings us into the 20th century in China and we see the relationship between China and America. We are told that Sun Yat-sen helps overthrow the Manchurians and is considered the founder of the republic and is considered the George Washington of China. He is not the founder of China but he sets in motion the movement of the Republic. He does not set in motion Marxism but makes it possible for Mao to come in and finish what he has stated. He is a rebellion leader and gets the rebellion started as he is in America raising money to help finance the rebellion. It is interesting that this important movement is being financed in part by America but Sun Yat-sen is not even present when this uprising starts. It was especially interesting that they did not believe they could win but felt the need to proceed with what they felt was necessary. This is a great example to show students because the odds are stacked against you sometimes you need to proceed anyway if you believe in your cause.
We finally make it to the 20th century and the cartoon about America in 1941 is a direct perspective on how Japan viewed America. Japan through these cartoons shows America as this bigger than life character that is motivated by greed. We see this in the larger than life illustrations of President Roosevelt with sacks of money. Japan tries to show America as this greedy nation that needs to be contained by the Japanese for the better of the world. We also see the Japanese showing themselves as slaves or workers for America and being put to manual labor. This is meant to upset their people and have them rally around the move to contain America through military action.
Things about America and Americans, is an interesting look at American people through the eyes of Xu Zhengkeng who was visiting the United States around 1920.
I love how the article starts by stating that: They have a proverb that time is gold. This sums up the article as Xu goes on to point out the American obsession with making money and having conveniences at the touch of a button. Many things that we take for granted as being available to all people such as vending machines were revolutionary to Xu. It is really funny how Xu talks about birth control, female independence and the child’s place in society. We look back and think that children and women were tnot reated very well at this time. The lack of voting, children working in factories and lack of equality when compared to men all seem apparent to us. But Xu believes that we are in excess of the norm when he views these people in America. It would be a good assignment to have students look at today and attempt to forecast the changes of norms in the next 25 years while looking at the changes that have happened since Xu visited America and today. How much will we change for the better or for the worse.
How to Make the Universe Right: The Art of Priests and Shamans from Vietnam To Southern China.
The Fowler museum currently has an exhibit that presents a large selection of scrolls, ritual objects and ceremonial clothing related to the different religious traditions from Vietnam to Southern China. Most of the pieces date from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The robes and headdresses are brightly colored and contain intricate embroidery that shows the attention to detail paid by these cultures toward their religious ceremonies. This exhibit highlighted the importance that these priests had as they were the mediator between the physical world and the spiritual world. The tapestries from the various cultures showed scenes from these societies beliefs that told stories and engaged the viewer and their beliefs. This exhibit was well presented and visually stunning as we see the emphasis of ceremonial items when it came to religion and its beliefs. I love that this museum is free and I believe there should be more access to these museums for those that cannot afford them.
After seeing the film and the struggles of the workers in china I go to the time in America when workers were attempting to organize labor. All workers at some time are faced with this dilemma of organizing and putting their jobs and lives in jeopardy. At this point in America, unions are under pressure to give up the rights they fought so hard for. Pensions are under funded, there is a 2 tier system for workers, new workers do not receive the same benefits that older workers do. There are no longer lifetime health benefits and unions are losing their grip on the American worker. Does China believe they will be able to avoid the problems that the workers in America have encountered? If so, is it because they will include the government in this process and call it democratic socialism?
I’m really curious about how Han Dongfang feels about his mother country China. After all they have put him through I am curious if he feels betrayed by his country or does he still have a patriotic feeling toward them. I think this film and discussion will be a chance to see images that show what is really going on and what life is like in China. It is hard to get a real feeling about this massive country by listening to the news or reading articles. Images will be nice to see for ourselves and let them tell us the story rather than news outlets.
