The Yuan dynasty is a short dynasty in Chinese history, but it has a powerful impact on China. It leads the Ming dynasty to build Ming Great Wall. Most Chinese people don't like the Yuan dynasty. We hold a negative attitude toward Yuan Dynasty. Yuan dynasty had strong discrimination against Chinese people, especially those people who were from the South Song area. There were many restrictions on Han people. For example, didn't allow them to participate in government. Qing dynasty learned the history of Yuan, so they higher Han people's status to consolidate the government's rule.

The mongol woman rided a house also reminds me of a video called:Puujee, a little strong girl who was living in Mongolia, but finally died.  A miserable short life. I would show this video to my students to show how hard the mongol girl was.

In the last few minutes of the video, Professor mentioned the Dragon Boat festival and mentioned Zongzi. I'm so appreciated. I know there are some picture books about dragon boat competitions. Also, there are some picture books about how to make Zongzi. I plan to use those picture books to teach my students about Chinese culture. Then I may tell the story about Qu, Yuan to them. When I was young, I didn't know the meaning of Chinese culture, and I just followed what others did: eating Zongzi and Eggs, washing my body by using a specific herb, putting that kind of herb in front of our front door, which could prevent evils to enter the house. Those unique memories are still fresh in my mind, so I would like to pass my experience to the next generation.

Thanks for Professor Dube's videos! I've learned so much interesting knowledge about Chinese Philosophy and history. I searched Ban, Zhao(班昭), as mentioned in the video. I felt so surprised that although she was such a knowledgeable woman and she helped to finish the history book of Han Shu (汉书), she still believed that women are born the subordinate to men. She even wrote a book about how women should behave well in her family with so many detailed rules. Although she lived many thousand years ago under the limitation of the historical period, I felt so uncomfortable about her thinking.

Moreover, I want to mention that the First Emperor of Qin, who let people make Terra cotta warriors was such a creative and humanistic man. Although he was described as a tyrant in the Chinese history books, I still believe that he had a kind face in his life. In addition, the excavation of Terra cotta warriors let the whole world know what the apperance of Qin people looked like.

I'm so lucky to join this Japanese History course. I am learning Japanese, but I don't have enough background of Japan. The language is based on culture. So I applied this course and attended every section. I have learned so much from several weeks learning.

Firstly, I have a more clear idea of Japanese history period.

Secondly, I understand how Japanese form the culture like today.

Finally, I know how to use what I have learned to teach my students.

    More comments:

The Japanese history workshop inspired me a lot. It is so brief but contains so much information. I want to visit Japan to understand more about Japanese history. Those videos from Professor Morgan Pitelka is a history tour. I have an apparent mindset of Japanese history based on the timeline.

I wonder how much effort Japanese people have put into protecting their traditional culture. Moreover, I’m inspired by their endurance. Their traditional culture shows the historical difference between Eastern and Western.

Modern China is a controversial topic. China has developed so many modern technologies, and people have promoted their life levels. Based on the historical view, Japan and China have a very tied connection. China has learned so many ideas from Early Modern Japan. There are many examples, like taking cultural revolutions to adjust to western cultures, learning and cooperating with other western countries, understanding different philosophical ideas, etc. However, although they have learned so much from western countries, they traditionally keep their living styles somehow.

The best way to teach my students about modern China and Japan is to teach them food culture. In my experience, food culture accounts for a large proportion of Chinese culture. Interestingly, both Chinese and Japanese have ramen. So, I would like to ask my students to compare ramen styles and dig deeper about the cultural similarity and differences behind the phenomena.

    Here are three steps:

First, I would like to incorporate the videos from Liziqi into my study.  Liziqi is a pretty woman who is living in the rural area of Sichuan Province. She made beef roman by using such a romantic method. This video can be a hook for my students.

(Sichuan is a big province in China. Liziqi is living in the rural area of China. She can do lots of amazing works. Students will feel amazed by Liziqi’s video.)

Then, I want to compare the roman in China and Japan. First, I would like to invite them to taste both roman styles. They need to tell me the similarity of both roman. Then I will ask my students to tell the difference between roman. They also need to watch two more videos about the real lives of chiefs from Japan and China.

Third, based on the style of ramen, I would like to introduce the cultural similarity and differences between China and Japan. After reviewing the videos, students need to tell the cultural logic behind the videos. Finally, I will ask my students to summarize how to protect culture from globalization as their homework.

(Students can do the comparison based on ingrediencies of Chinese ramen and Japanese ramen)

Geography in Japan is a wonderful topic for me to know Japan better! I didn't realize the three movements of mainland people to form the main population of Japan.

The Jomon period is similar to other early cultures in the history. I want to compare the history of Jomon culture to other similar cultures to make a presentation to my students. That would inspire them to find the universal connections between different cultures

Thanks for your sharing! Your descriptions about teaching enlight my teaching reflections! The idea of ritual is such a cultural topic to my students to understand East Asia culture. Buddism is another big topic as well. I would ask my students to search the Internet to find the differences between Shinto and Buddism in Japanese rituals.

Actually the incense culture are also from China. Ancient Japanese people copied the life style of China. Compare Incense and Fragarance as well as the culture backgrounds behind them is a good way to teach the culture differences between Eastern and Western.

Hi Lou, I think the topic about Japanese women is such a important topic for my teaching. The status of Japanese women in modern society is a serious social topic. Thanks for your writing!
